Product Description

Product Description

This book integrates object relations theory, ego psychology, and character analytic approaches to provide a new understanding of human behavior and character development. In itself, this integration is a remarkably innovative undertaking, yielding a consistent, understandable and clinically useful view of psychopathology, therapy, and health.Johnson uses an active treatment approach that draws upon all major schools of psychotherapeutic thought, choosing techniques that serve specific purposes and outlining changes in behavioral, affective, and cognitive domains that are necessary for lasting characterological change. Focusing on character pathology resulting from disorders in attachment, the book discusses etiology, characteristic affects, behaviors and cognitions, bodily expressions of character, and therapeutic objectives and techniques.

4.0 out of 5 stars A concise and reasonably informed view even 17 years later!, 22 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Characterological Transformation: The Hard Work Miracle (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book and felt it worth while reading even though the text is dated.

However for the both the inexperienced and the experienced therapist/counsellor it provides a usefull background of object relations and character annalysis approaches.

Written in an easy style and looking mainly at The Schizoid and the Oral Characters. It introduces us and then walks us through the differing and overlapping problems commonly experienced with both types and offers suggestions and approaches to work, within these areas. Naturally things have moved on since it was written and newer techniques and approaches exist, but I still think this book is well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique integration of psychotherapy approaches, 21 Jan 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Characterological Transformation: The Hard Work Miracle (Paperback)
As a graduate student in social work, I found this book enormously helpful in understanding how to integrate various psychotherapy approaches in professional practice. I checked this book out of the library so many times, I finally bought the book. His methods of how to facilitate personality growth in clients helped me understand myself in new and helpful ways. I feel I have grown tremendously from reading and digesting this book. Psychotherapy of the kind he writes about is truly a "hard work miracle"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, 11 July 2008
By Karina "Healer" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Characterological Transformation: The Hard Work Miracle (Paperback)
As a student of the Brennan School of Healing, I am interested in the energetic as well as the psychological/emotional components of healing. This book blends them better than any other book I've come across. He shows exercises, that I believe are derived from Bioenergetics, which aid the client in touching into their hidden pain. They are designed to be easy to perform yet productive in getting past the blocks. The only drawback is that this book only addresses the schizoid and oral characterologies in depth. I'm hoping he does another volume on the remaining characterologies.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Single Most Helpful Books on Therapy I have Encountered, 22 May 2011
By Passionate Therapist - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Characterological Transformation: The Hard Work Miracle (Paperback)
Apart from Alexander Lowen, Stephen Johnson is the only author whose books I have read more than twice. Johnson combines the character analysis of Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen (without distortion or dilution) with more mainstream therapies. This does a great service to therapists practicing in today's climate. Johnson is willing to go into the tough stuff and the dark stuff, which few other therapists are willing to touch. His honesty, compassion, and humility are evident. This is not an easy book, but well worth digesting. Johnson writes in a academic style, probably because he was trying ( probably futilely) to open academia to the value of character analysis and bodywork. This book covers two 'character styles' that have the most 'hard work' to do to get back to good feelings--the oral and schizoid characters. If one is looking for an introduction to character analysis Lowen's Bioenergetics: The Revolutionary Therapy That Uses the Language of the Body to Heal the Problems of the Mind or Johnson's own Character Stylesare possibly better places to start, but this book treats the subject with unmatched sensitivity.
