As with all written tutorials on 3d modeling, you end up getting stuck, because you cannot replicate what is being shown in the tutorial, this is usually down to poor explanation, missed details, or software version differences.

Unfortunately the first two "tutorials" in this book suffer from the tutorial wall, it's not severe as the first one is irrelevant, but the second one you're supposed to model an eye shape using curves, loft the surface with nurbs, then convert the nurbs to polygons.

Even following the book exactly, it just doesn't come out anything like it, what's more is the convert nurbs to polygons command didn't even work, so either something was missed out, or the version difference changes the way it's meant to be done.

The rest of the book looks ok, it's well laid out and written, you can definately get something from this book if you have the tenacity to ignore the bits that just don't work out.

the quality of the work isn't exactly high, it explains at the end of the book that once you've finished you can start building your portfolio, higher level training and practice will be needed to land a job after this book.

An Invaluable Source for ZBrush and Maya! 29 Jan 2008
By indy filmmaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the first book I found that deals with ZBrush. As a new user of the program, I found this book invaluable in getting started with ZBrush. The tutorials are well laid out and there are tons of supplemental videos to help, too. I've been using Maya for a while, mainly for vehicle modeling, and I found this foray into organic character modeling to be very helpful in building my skills.

Excellent Intermediate Book 17 April 2008
By xiombarg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this book to be one of the best intermediate books out there for both Maya and Z-Brush. Be sure to read the recommendations at the beginning of the book. Great stuff with easy to read tips that can be applied immediately. There are lots of things about this book that I like better than the Autodesk books. This gets to the point quicker, instead of spinning you around with overview or "Before you begin.." or "Conventions used in this book.." type of junk. If you've made it through one of the beginning Autodesk books and want to expand out a little, this book works great.

Amazing maya and zbrush book 16 Jun 2008
By B. Hanken - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a great book for creating characters in maya and refining them in zbrush. It is written by a pro (the guy was Lead 3D Technical Artist at LucasArts) so he definitely knows what he's talking about. He covers the whole art pipeline process and gives a great overview, but also goes into great detail. It's the best 3D book I own, and I own many!
