Synopsis

The world stood still on the 8th December 1980, the day John Lennon was assassinated. People simply could not comprehend how such a beloved musical and cultural icon could be taken so suddenly and in such a senseless manner. In CHAPTER 27, first-time writer-director JP Schaefer attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding Lennon's death--much to the consternation of Yoko Ono and fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, who expressly asked that people not mention the killer's name for fear of giving him the notoriety he so craved. Jared Leto (FIGHT CLUB, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) steps into the role of Mark Chapman, the crazed fan who ultimately fired those five fatal shots at the former Beatle. The actor's shocking physical transformation (he piled on a whopping 67 pounds to play the part) is indeed remarkable, but it's his central performance as a man on the brink of mental collapse that won him critical acclaim. The film's title is derived from JD Salinger's classic novel THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, which ends on chapter 26. It is the same book that Chapman was holding at the time of the murder and, he claims, holds the key to his actions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underneath all the Boycotting there is a decent film , 30 Mar 2008

When hearing about Lindsay Lohan starring in a film about John Lennon's killer it would seem there was no hope. Nevertheless, one has to give this film a chance to be surprised by what appears to be an artistic approach at film making.

The film has a basic concept of following Lennon's killer and trying to display his disturbed psyche and document his actions in the days before he killed Lennon in December 1980. Leto plays Chapman very well, not only looking the part but pulling it off surprisingly well.

Lohan plays a Lennon fan and is featured in only several sequences throughout the film. One should note that at the time of filming around January 2006 it was prior to any drink/drug issues or arrests. I feel that she does give a good performance similar too if not stronger than she displayed in 'Bobby' (2006).

I would recommend the film to anyone who will be able to put aside the boycott attitude that has for some reason been placed upon it. The film in no way disrespects Lennon nor does it show his killer in a positive light. As for Lohan, she does provide a worthy performance so I see no reason why her personal issues should stop people from viewing the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jared Leto gives an astonishing performance., 18 April 2008

A truly remarkable film, the director managed to successfully delve into the psyche of the murderer of John Lennon, portraying his mental issues and his personal obsession incredibly well. Jared Leto plays the murderer and gives a very believable performance, his complete dedication to the role was shown throughout as he gained a great amount of weight so that he could get the correct feel for the character. I absolutely recommend this film, not only for the brilliant acting, but for the incredibly accurate representation of a killers mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping With Shocks And Wonder., 4 May 2008

Chapter 27 needs more running time and a little more about the killer's background but this does well in my standards. Jared Leto looked like a stranger with 67 pounds of fat and darkened shades but he is stunning and powerful as Mark Chapman, this is his best perfomance ever needing a award for his effort. The other co-stars were quite surpising inculding the troubled Lohan as the young fan who may or may not have fallen in love with Mark. It was totally gripping with shocks and wonder especially when Mark killed John, it gave me shivers down my spine and also when the camera was pointed at his face. Very good, I would recommend it to anyone who loved John and wondered why this deeply disturbed man would kill a icon.
