I bought this on one resounding rating, the pictures looked good, and the specifications read well. Unfortunately, I found this feeder of poor design and limited use: the hanging loop is loosely fitted into the plastic tube, so when the lid is raised up the wire to open the feeder, the loop readily "pops-out"; the feeder is only suitable to deliver very small seeds; and not many birds feed at this feeder, as they find the rod "perch" difficult to stand-on/balance.

I thought this was a great product but the birds really don't like it preferring to use the almost identical (but different make) feeder, I have tried swapping the position and letting the other feeder run out, but sadly the birds are not keen to use this one. I have no idea why as it looks pretty much identical to me to the one they love... Have even tried adding tape to the shiny surface in case the birds were being put off by a reflection.

I have only one problem with feeder the birds will NOT eat from it. I won't give up yet on the feeder. I am going to cover the mirror like base with black vinyl and see if this helps, as just maybe this is what is putting the birds off from feeding.
That said the feeder is strong and robust and looks like it could be squirrel proof.

I've got several bird seed feeders in my garden and bought this product because it has good reviews from the other customers. Of all the feeders I have this is the most poorly designed and I certainly wouldn't buy this product again or probably any mad by the same company. I don't like the fact that the curved metal handle pops out of the holes drilled into the perspex tube the minute you take the lid of to refill. Other ones I have don't do this as the handles are more securely attached to the tube. The outlet for the seeds and perching area for the birds are fine and they have used the feeder. I simply think there are better designs out there for a similar cost.

I purchased this at the same time as the 12" Heavy duty seed feeder> None of the birds like the 8" feeder. I think it is because the perches are a little too small in diameter and too shiney for grip. Not even the smallest coal tit would use it.

This feeder does have some plus points:
Looks good and the lid and base are lightweight, feels too light to be steel so shouldn't chip and rust like heavy duty orange version.
Simpler basic lid fitting design makes it easy to fully remove and clean inside the top of the plastic feeder tube.
Unfortunately the cons outweigh the pros:
Feeder ports don't seem to allow seeds to flow down easily and the birds can't get more seed until someone gives it a good shake.
I've tried a robin mix and sunflower hearts and these seem to be too large to flow into port area where birds can collect seed.
I found this feeder extremely difficult to put back together after cleaning. Tricky to fit both perches as they slot into base too. The bolt is also very short so I couldn't put it together without using a pair of tweezers to place bolt in hole to connect both perches.
This feeder is going to go in the bin after only 2 fills of bird seed, not much point in keeping it if the birds can't get the seed out.

I have had the large one up in my garden for the last 3 years and the birds have no trouble using it and although the squirrels try to take the seed they don't empty it as with other makes.

I did, however, have to make a small adjustment. When I first got it the birds were reluctant to feed from it and I noticed they were having trouble perching at the openings, so I pulled the inner wires out of some white electrical flex - the sort used for lamps or kettles - and then pushed a piece about an 1" long onto the ends of the perches - they fitted as if tailor made and the birds now have no trouble getting to the seed. Sometimes the squirrels will try and chew it off, but it is easily replaced. Too many hours spent watching Blue Peter with my children!!

However, it seemed an easier solution than returning it, because apart from that it is perfect and has lasted very well indeed. I would have no hesitation in recommending this, but you may have to make the 'small adjustment' - hence the 4 stars.

Wanted a bird seed feeder that is squirrel safe and this fits the bill. Would recommend this and the squirrel safe stainless steel nut feeder as the squirrels cannot chew the container.
