This feeder is pretty good but not perfect (see uploaded pics & video). It's certainly solid & well made & unlike some "niger" feeders, the slits are designed for the narrower beak of the finch.

This is a VERY big feeder - had I known, I wouldn't have got this size - my fault I know & not the reason for knocking a star off.

If you've got multiple finches in your garden, then maybe it's a good idea. I've found that even when only filled less than 20%, it makes a LOT of mess, as the seed simply falls out of the slits - see video showing one day's worth of spillage. A completely filled feeder obviously has a correspondingly higher spill rate, making Chapelwood's "catching tray" even more necessary. [I didn't take to the latter though, as pigeons soon learnt to land on it - wrecking my bird-feeding station with their considerable weight...]

After filling, it only took a day for the first finch to be seen feeding (greenfinch), & since then, over the last week or so (March to April '14), we've had a goldfinch, brambling & chaffinch - often feeding in pairs - so it's certainly been worthwhile. Whether the dawn chorus is louder now because of a slightly more localised bird population due to the feeders or whether it's simply bc it's spring, I can't say; nonetheless, it's very welcome :-)

Finally, be warned that it's very BIG - quite a bit bigger than a standard feeder. Which means the weight (& swinging momentum in the wind, whether filled full or not, is quite considerable - making it heavy to hang & requiring quite a bit of space around it).

Hope this helps.

We get a lot of finches in our garden so i was looking at feeding more with spending a fortune. After seeing this product on here i looked around and found this by far the best price. When it arrived it what seemed a very big box for one object (but once unpacked I can not see how else they could do it, to ensure good protection) I was impressed with the feeder it seems o be of solid construction and now it is full of Niger seed we are getting more finches than ever a success.

After waiting months using a smaller Chapelwood feeder the goldfinches started coming (especially after I made sure the seed was not dried out!) and I needed to buy a bigger feeder. This one works just fine - though, of course, you need to have the tray as well to limit the amount of niger seed on the floor. Other smaller birds seem to feed off the tray and the regular jackdaws in the garden don't attempt the tray or feeder.

Positive points:
Good size feeder
Lots of perches
Cleaning is very simple

Negatives:
Lowest perches are not properly secured (so you have to wedge them in at a strange angle)
Base 'quick release/easy clean' spring mechanism feels a little flimsy
Seed slots are very large (compared to other nyger seed feeders), so the seed falls out all over the place and it's very wasteful
Birds actually seem to prefer to be further spaced on different feeders rather than on the multiple perches on just one feeder

It is a very good product.
I would recommend it to my friends.
It is very easy to clean and allows for a lot of birds to feed.
