5.0 out of 5 stars Schmorgesborg 30 Mar. 2013

Great way for Asymmetrical Press to jumpstart their publishing company. Chapbook Volume 1 has plenty of variety and there's a story in this book for everyone. Although I was entertained with all the short stories, I'd have to say my favorite was Echo Lake by JFM. It'll give you a taste of romance that keeps you wanting more. Grab a copy, and support some awesome writers and their inspiring company, Asymmetrical Press.

4.0 out of 5 stars Several enjoyable stories 3 Mar. 2013

I really enjoyed all of the stories. There were a couple that dragged on a bit with a lot of description of every little thing but they redeemed themselves in the end. I especially enjoyed "The Loneliest Man," "Xerxes," and "The Successor" and I am considering buying the books that they are excerpted from now that I have gotten a taste of what they are about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction 2 Mar. 2013
By Samuel Engelen - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This introductory book to the Asymmetrical team is a wonderful collection of very different, but very inspiring excerpts and articles.

Chase Night is currently my favorite writer and whenever I read a new excerpt I get more excited about his upcoming books. But obviously Chase isn't the only reason to get this book; there's the amazing introduction to Colin Wright's Iceland India Interstate (which I think is a must-read, especially if you love travel writing) and an excerpt from the Real Power series (can't wait for the third part), both beautiful literary prose and thought-provoking articles by Joshua and Ryan from 'The Minimalists', and the surprisingly young Shawn S. Mihalik, who proves here that he is a very skilled and versatile writer.

If you're ready to discover something new but you're not sure what tickles your fancy, get this book and find out.

If you've already been following these guys, be aware that you may have already read some of the work in here, but there will still be enough to quench your thirst for a little while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview Of Asymmetrical Press' Work! 26 Feb. 2013
By Robyn Devine - Published on

A quick read, Chapbook Volume 1 is the perfect introduction to Asymmetrical Press and their authors. It's clear each of these authors excels at their craft, and the excerpts from other works (both currently available and soon to be published) made me want to pick up the full volumes! A great teaser for future books, and thankfully you can already buy a few of the excerpted books in the meantime.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Pot Pourri of Short Writings 3 Mar. 2013

This is a collection of short extracts from forthcoming (and previous) published work by the various authors. Don't go looking for a connection between the stories. It is best treated as a dipstick to gauge the authors' fuller works.

1. Two stories by Shawn Mihalik:
# Requirements and Expectations of Excellence is a well written piece about working in retail. The story takes a spin back to in time, growing up with a single parent. Questions things you take for granted from a consumer's perspective. Would look forward to the full book.
# The successor is a short story that moves back and forth in time and location. Difficult to connect the dots in such a short piece. The fuller work should be easier to comprehend.

2. Two pieces by Colin Wright:
# Aiming Higher is part-fiction, part-travelogue about Iceland. Well written.
# Xerxes is a fast-paced story around technology, cults, singularity and the inter-connectedness of the world.

3. Two stories by Chase Night:
# Declined describes a retail encounter at an airport. A stark statement between two have-nots and the perception of truth.
# Beautiful Brant Mitchell is about dares and breaking convention.

4. Echo Lake is a nice love story on feelings and break-up. Would be interesting to read the rest in JFM's forthcoming collection.

5. Short extracts from the Minimalists:
# Prime Optimist, Unamerican Dream, Conformity as a Drug, The Loneliest Man. These are extracts from the minimalist blog and from previous books by the Minimalists.
