On the 'The Thin Red Line' soundtrack, there's one track of Guadalcanal natives chanting. If you liked that, you'll LOVE this album. It was recorded by various choirs and church members on Guadalcanal, and is mostly in pidgin English (much of which is easy to understand). It's a really lovely, uplifting selection of beautiful singing, that really captures the feel of the Solomon islands. A really fantastic cd that I highly recommend.

If you watched The Thin Red Line and felt drawn in by Hans Zimmer's beautiful score, then you were most likely aware of how well married the score is with the Melanesian Chants that threaded through the film. I looked for the Soundtrack CD primarily to find these chants, and while I was very happy with Hans Zimmer's compositions, I was unhappy to find only one of the many chants from the film featured on the disc.

Hoping that one day I would find a re-released and extended soundtrack, I found this CD. It took about as long as the fraction of a second to click the "add to basket" button as it did on playing this CD to bring out the same emotional charge I felt during the film.

The 26 tracks on this CD are an experience, in that this is beautiful heartfelt music, with no instruments, just voices. Many tracks are from the film, more, even though not appearing in the film are just as rich as those that were. Highly recommneded.

It seems I am not the only person to be captivated by the Melanesian chants from "The thin Red Line". I too was disappointed there was not more Melanesian music on the film CD. This was a big oversight. Hans Zimmer's score was very impressive, but what really gave a special atmosphere to the film was this music. The battle portrayed in the film was fought on the Island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. How appropriate that the music shouild come from the people of this Island.

These songs and chants were recorded in November 1997 on Guadalcanal. They are sung in the common language of the islands which is pidgin English. The songs with mixed voices were recorded during a choir practice at All Saints Parish Church Honiara, and those with male voices during a morning service of the Melanesian Brotherhood, a community of lay ministers in Tabalia at the Western end of the island.

I attended a church service in The Cook Islands in the South Pacific and the singing made it a wonderful experience. Those lovely people were Polynesians as opposed to Melanesians, but all the peoples of the Pacific know how to sing. They sing from the heart with such joy and a naturalness that we cannot match in the West. It was a blessed day that I found this track. It has been in my car CD player for the last three years driving my family mad but giving me endless joy. It is one of my most cherished CDs and is breathtakingly beautiful to listen to. The songs are lovely throughout, without any weak points.

I have already searched the internet to see if these choirs have produced any more music without success. I have even written to the church in Honiara without getting a reply. They probably thought I was mad! I must be content with this. Highly recommended.
