On the other end of the spectrum, here are some beautiful Polish songs for children, folk songs really. These are sung in Polish and are charming and sensitively written....
The five songs are indeed impressionistic, but an additional feature of the writing not mentioned by Richard is that Lutoslawski (according to program notes issued at the first performance) was actually using all 12 tones at the same time, quite amazingly shifting from one combination to another and the result, far from being an incomprehensible mess is a most delicate and beautiful construction.
You really must, and I mean MUST, listen to this. I miss this dear man (he passed away a few years ago) and I hope that many people get an opportunity to hear him and his singular interpretation of Polish sensibilities and semantics.
