I have followed Mike Westbrook's musical path on and off
for over a quarter of a century. My first experience of
this great British jazz composer/performer's work was at
a concert performance of 'The Cortege' with his wonderful
orchestra in the early eighties. What a mesmerising work
and what a great band - as important a springboard for new
young talent as it was a harbour for more seasoned blood.

'Chanson Irresponsable' (2004) is both an arcane and an
irrepressibly boyant work reflecting the breadth and diversity
of Mr Westbrook's musical experience and vision.

The fourteen pieces spread seductively over two discs
are nothing if not European in character.

Woodwind, brass, strings, percussion and voices; an economical,
versatile and technically superb ensemble. A real dream-team.

Kate Westbrook and Matthew Sharp share vocal duties.
The texts by Mrs Westbrook, translated into a number
of languages, concern the life-cycle and adventures of
sedge warblers (I told you it was arcane !). Humour and pathos
combine in music of extraordinary diversity and power.

From the birds' arrival in the Spring to the death-by-cat
ending our attention is never allowed to wander.

The string quartet opens proceedings with 'The Reed Bed,
The Oak Tree and The Stream' a slow, laconic melody punctuated
by brass and ghostly accordian. A stunning composition.

The aggressively disjointed rhythms of 'Stolzierender Protz'
with its blissfully discordant vocal explosions is a hoot !

'Amore Spensierato' is one among many highlights; its
spellbinding cello introduction evolving into a hauntingly
beautiful duet for the two singers.

I hesitated to buy this,as I thought it may be a little bit Messiaen, and not enough Westbrook, but finally gave in.Glad I did,for it is a beautifully recorded pair of discs,an in concert performance that is remarkable for its studio like clarity, and delivers all the goods one would expect from this composer/musician.
Ein Vogel is on this,as on London Bridge, but a performance different enough to seem like another piece entirely.
Don't make my mistake and delay, get it while you can--praise to Enja, too, for putting out material that will not be a massive seller, but deserves to be.
