Product Description

CD Description

Formed in New York City in 1969, The Manhattan Transfer rose to the top of the UK charts in 1977 with `Chanson
D'Amour,' a record that kicked off a love affair between the British public and the vocal quartet. They racked up
eight further UK chart entries, all of which are included in this 40-track retrospective. Effortlessly switching from
rock and roll to pop, bebop, old time gospel, bossa nova and `30s jazz swing, this set demonstrates why The
Manhattan Transfer are considered the most versatile vocal harmony group on the planet.

As if to underline this point, the group's array of Grammy Awards puts them in the highest echelon of vocal
harmony groups. In 1981 they were the first group to win Grammy Awards in both Pop and Jazz categories in the
same year with `Boy From New York City' (Best Pop Performance) and `Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)' (Best Jazz Performance) both of which are included in this package. As though that wasn't enough, in 1982 and 1983 they won consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance with `Route 66' and `Why Not'. Once again, both
included on this superior package. They actually managed to top the previous achievements when they won an
unprecedented 12 nominations for the album Vocalese - the single greatest number of Grammy nominations that
any album has achieved in one year - thus cementing their position as one of the most important and innovative
vocal groups in the history of pop muzak!

Manhattan Transfer effectively reinvented many traditional songs for the audiences of the 70s, 80s and 90s and
they are still together to this day.

Classy Transfer! 26 Mar 2011
I dont really know much about 'Manhattan Transfer' except that they had a number one hit with 'Chanson D'Amour' which was so catchy and that they used to appear on 'The Two Ronnies' sometimes( when Barbara Dickson was busy!).
However I have been looking for a decent compilation as an introduction to their music for a long time, but have either found that the 'best ofs' dont include the tracks that I wanted.. (Chanson D'Amour, On A little Street In Singapore, 'Spice Of Life', 'Boy From New York City' etc) or if they did they were ridiculously expensive. So finally here it is, a comprehensive 2 cd collection that includes all of the hits and loads of other tracks to educate me about Manhattan Transfer at a really budget price. The music is really classy and all the hits sound as good as I remembered or better. I am thoroughly enjoying listening to these excellent singers and the beautiful instrumentation of these tracks. You wont ever find a better compilation than this. Highly recommended.

By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
The writer of the liner notes exaggerates somewhat when he claims that there is no style of music that the Manhattan Transfer cannot do. Still, they have a very diverse repertoire, albeit most of it is rooted in jazz and swing, and this 39-track compilation clearly shows that diversity. The period covered is from 1975 to 2000, but I suspect most fans remember them best for their hits in the early part of their career. Although they were successful in both Britain and America, the hits weren't always the same.

Operator, the song that became their first big American hit, is here along with the UK number one hit Chanson d'amour, their first UK hit Tuxedo junction, which was itself a cover of a song that had been a big American hit for Glenn Miller in the forties, and all their other UK hits including Walk in love, On a little street in Singapore, Spice of life, Twilight zone twilight tone. Away from their normal repertoire, they recorded excellent versions of Where did our love go (Diana Ross and the Supremes) and A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square (most commonly associated with Vera Lynn).

There are many other great songs here, all interpreted superbly by Manhattan Transfer. Some of them may be familiar from other recordings even if you haven't heard the versions here. Whether you recognize the other songs or not, this is a magnificent reminder of some of the music that Manhattan Transfer recorded for Atlantic.

I've been a fan of the group since Chanson D'amour, a long , long time and have all of their cd's. That was the reason I bought this one, just to have it in my collection. And at a very reasonable price, worth it for an addition to it.
It may have none of the packaging of The Manhattan Transfer Anthology- Birdland, but is a very good very reasonable priced cd for anyone just discovering the group-or who might have wondered what had happened to them after all these years. Still going strong I am glad to say.
It has all of the tracks that people in the UK will be familiar with and a few more up to date tracks they might not be.
My only slight gripe, would be the cover. Ok, it's a cartoony type picture. But Laurel Masse, left the group in 1978 and only recorded 3 albums with the group. Cheryl Bentyne had been singing with them for 33 years!
Anyway, sit back, listen and enjoy The Man Tran sound.
