Changing Rooms Colour is aimed at the TV interiors- makeover fan who is "fed up with mundane magnolia and bursting for a colourful change". The author, Linda Barker, is a professional interior designer who is probably better known for her appearances on BBC's Changing Rooms and the book follows the same cheery TV formula.
Barker divides the colour spectrum, and correspondingly the book, into four sections: natural colour, pastels, vivid colours and deep colours. She gives each colour scheme a foody reference, for example "Bread and Butter" for naturals, "Summer Pudding" for vivid colours and "Wine Gums" for deep tones. The metaphor is extended to the individual shades, some of which, like Café au Lait, are a delicate evocation of colour. Others, such as Tutti-Frutti ice-cream are anything but subtle. As the book states: "the excitement of the Summer Pudding palette suggests a room that vibrates before your eyes."
The book gives practical advice on how to work with colour, how to break traditional colour rules (some might wish it didn't) and the manipulation of light. It also considers more than just painting, demonstrating techniques for fabric-lined walls, stencilling, including a vibrant pink stencilled rug and calligraphy. Barker also looks at how different colour families can be mixed and how texture affects a colour scheme.
Changing Rooms Colour justifies its title with striking photography that makes the most of every shade and effect. First I rent from library. then I decided to buy for my referrence as it gives me completely understanding about colours without no fuss, stuffs I knew since young but still got no idea how to mix 'n match, creating harmonizing, even more. really inspiring not just only for make house impression. the images are also great and clear.

I started watching "Changing Rooms" a few months ago when we switched to digital cable...and was hooked immediately.I like all of the designers on the show,and am amazed at the make-overs they achieve in two days.(same as the American version"Trading Spaces.")
In this book,Linda explains clearly how colors are used to create certain moods,and atmosphere.The book is filled with lavish examples of how color can be used,and it also gives you an idea of what your particular likes/dislikes are color-wise.All of the "Changing Rooms" books are very well-written,and if you have a desire to create a new look in your home, this book, and all the others will be a huge help.

Linda's book on Colour and the Changing Rooms book (as well another book by her called "Finishing Touches") are fabulous....they're practical, give great info and give you inspiring ideas that you could envision in your own home.
Linda is a master of creativity and innovation -- she comes up with ways to use things you'd never think of and takes you through the steps of how to create them in your own home. She's one of my favorite designers on the BBC America show, "Changing Rooms," and her books are definitely worth the money.

...a great place for anyone to start!

For some funny reason, when I first checked out my new channel BBC American on the new super cable, I found this little show. And, I was hooked ever since. I don't like home improvement shows because most of the time they fix things that I will never do, like rebuild a classic barn with 15 carpenters and a 50k budget. Hey, I live in the city, that is never gonna happen to me. 'Changing Rooms' and their designer Linda Barker actually work on projects that can be accomplished by the average schmo, like me. And, these books, take you through step-by-step. It is a total DIY approach. Not all the designs are fluffy or build around gaudy themes (though some are, usually for fun.) Most are fun and basic ideas that can be manufactured with a small budget (like the show.) From reading through this book and Linda's 'Finishing Touches' book, I now have a much better eye for what I can do with my space, and knowing that is will not cost much in the end. Which is what true home improvement shows should be all about! If you are looking for new colors or want to redo an entire home, this is a great place to start for inspiration!
