Excellent 26 Dec 2000

No praise is too high for this second book in the 'Think Through History' series. 'Changing Minds' takes the wealth of information that the National Curriculum expects 12 year-olds to take in about the early-modern period, twists it and cuts it and produces a clear, humorous and very well-structured textbook. Each chapter centres around a fairly broad key question and then an overall activity designed to answer this - eg a booklet for primary school children on Henry's break with Rome, or a role play of two visitors to 16th century London sharing their contrasting opinions. Smaller 'steps' ensure students accumulate the knowledge and developing the understanding necessary for the final task - maybe the one misgiving is that they don't really stand on their own if you wanted to look at a couple of pages and then lead to your own activity, but generally the ideas are so well thought out you'd be hard pressed to improve on them! Any book that can make the later Stuarts and the Hanoverians intelligible and enjoyable (by including a page with each monarch speaking in the 1st person, about their alcoholic tendencies as well as their dealings with Parliament - all this leading to a balloon debate) gets my vote immediately. With superb presentation and clear layout of text, every History teacher needs his/her own copy - and hopefully every school will have several.
