Solid adventure fantasy and a good set-up for the series,

This review is from: Changeling (Paperback)
Trey Laporte lives in a children's home following the death of his parents in a car accident. The day he wakes up to discover his bedroom trashed and belongings shredded coincides with the day that Lucien Charron visits the home. Lucien claims to know the truth about Trey's family and gives him an heirloom, an amulet that Trey must wear around his neck. Initially distrustful of this mysterious stranger with his strange eyes and aversion to sunlight, Trey nevertheless soon finds himself living in a stupendous London apartment where he discovers that vampires, demons, and sorcerers are real and that as the last hereditary werewolf, he has tremendous powers of his own, powers mentioned in an ancient prophecy. While trying to come to terms with the fact that Lucien is a vampire and fighting his attraction to Lucien's attractive sorceress daughter, Alexa, Trey is pitched straight into a fight with the evil vampire Caliban, who seeks domination over the world and is prepared to do anything to secure it.
Breezily told, this is an entertaining novel that is bound to appeal to boys and has solid character development. Feasey is particularly good at conveying Trey's confusion as he is caught up in events that quickly spin out of his control. The conflict that Trey feels between enjoying his powers as a werewolf and the urge that he has as a werewolf to kill and destroy is deftly handled and sets up a good dilemma for the series. Also well handled is his attraction to Lucien's daughter, Alexa, a sorceress and shopaholic (although as a character, Alexa at times crosses into being a caricature). Lucien falls into the trope of the redeemed vampire seeking to atone for his past, but has some good lines and is ably assisted by Tom, his tough, no-nonsense human Irish sidekick. Although Feasey gives the story a cracking pace, there are times when he head-hops between characters within scenes, which can be jarring and it's a shame that a key scene involving Alexa's kidnap is kept off-page. In addition Caliban is a caricature of a villain and could do with some more motivation and the book ends on a cliff-hanger that's a straight set-up for book 2, which some readers may find frustrating. There's a helpful guide to the creatures of Feasey's world at the back of the book, which is very entertaining.

Gripping horror story with engaging hero,
By Woolfwriter "WW" (Hants) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Changeling (Paperback)
The great appeal of this novel lies in the little deceptions woven through the text. Everything appears normal at first glance, but then is revealed to be just that bit different, enough to cause nightmares for the reader. The wonderfully named Trey Laporte wakes at the beginning of the novel in a room that looks like his own but on closer inspection appears to have been vandalised - but who did it? Trey is whisked away from the miserable care-home he's been living in by `Uncle' Lucien, a tall and mysterious stranger who turns out to be a vampire with a mysterious connection to Trey's dead parents. Lucien inhabits a luxury apartment in the heart of the city above floors of offices devoted to his unusual empire, where his call-centre is staffed by demons that assume human form. Trey, a brilliant teen hero, turns out to be far more than just your average teenaged boy when he discovers he is the last hereditary werewolf, destined to morph into a terrible creature with super-powers and inhuman physical strength, compelled to follow Lucien's combative plans to conquer his terrible vampire brother's quest to take over the human race. It may sound far-fetched, and yet credibility is never stretched too far in this novel. It's easy for the reader to accept the characters with all their flaws and remarkable physical attributes and the novel pumps along towards an exciting conclusion (but leaves you dangling for book two). There's even a love story threaded through the novel - Trey finds that he's becoming attracted to Lucien's daughter, Alexa. This softens the focus and provides a good contrast to the many action scenes in the novel. Overall the novel is reminiscent of some of the classic vampire horror novels popular during the 1980's, but Changeling benefits from a thoroughly contemporary feel that makes it suitable for the children's fiction market today. With more adventures planned, the author is bound to make quite a mark in this genre.

not up to scratch,
By Larewen Evenstar (Renfrewshire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Changeling (Paperback)
I've read a lot of young adult fiction along the lines of this book, darren shan, derek landy etc, and they are some of my favourite books, however, in reading this book, I was rather disappointed.firstly, the storyline, I suppose it's a decent introduction to a series, but there just wasn't enough suspense or terror in it for my liking. I did like that it kicked off into the action quite quickly, having the main character taken away from the home he is staying and going to live with his new guardian, who turns out to be a vampire. But after that, I felt there was very little to keep me reading. we quickly discover that the main character is a werewolf, and a very special one at that, one born of two werewolf parents (a rarity) and because of this, there are a lot of people who are after him. obviously, more of this will become clear as the series progresses, however, i don't think i will be reading the rest of the series. next the characters. As I've said, i've read lots of books in this genre, and characters seem to fall into two catagories (as they do with most books really), incredibly intricate characters that you care for and have to know what happens next or characters who are rather void of personality, are a bit samey, and unfortunately, I felt that's how the characters in this book were, all quite similar, rather stereotypical too. it's a shame really, because the premise of this book and series really appealed to me, however, it just didn't live up to expectations!
