Product Description

Product Description

Changeling, the debut studio album from Camille O'Sullivan, is an album of interpretations of some well-known and some not so well known songs, by the likes of Radiohead, Nick Cave and Arcade Fire, as well as three original songs, one penned especially for Camille by Gary Lightbody. Released on her own label Little Cat, the album was recorded over a two-year period, firstly in Exchequer Studio, Dublin (with Brian Crosby, ex Bell X1, playing and engineering) and secondly in Sun Studio and Bunker Studio, Australia. Camille produced the album along with long term collaborator and MD Feargal Murray and band member Eanna Hickey. It was mixed and mastered in Miloco Studios, London by Bryan Wilson (Florence and the Machine, Arcade Fire) and Mandy Parnell (Faithless, Bjork, Goldfrapp).

Up until 2012, Camille has released live albums but this is her first proper studio album. It has come about mainly from fans asking about recordings of show favourites such as "Ship Song", "Hurt" and "Wake Up". As a singer and performer, Camille has always been drawn to narrative songs, the love of the song and story-telling. Talking about the choice of songs on the album Camille says: "Not being a singer-songwriter, but a performer, you have to love the song and make it your own - not to cover it but - but to interpret it. Like when I'm on stage, inhabit it! I pick songs for a live show to be chameleon on stage, showing/exploring different aspects of myself and the songs - fragility, toughness, sadness, fun and anger. The show is very varied, and can go to a very dark place but also I just have fun and enjoy the music. Most songs are chosen due to an obsession with the song and being moved by the original - finding a way that I can make it my own - like actress with a monologue". And on self-producing Camille says: "After trying different producers, we never felt we were going down the same route we had created on stage (but wanted to bring further in studio). So, we decided that as Feargal, Eanna and I had worked together for years on the road, we should try and give it a go. I tend to be hands on when directing the stage shows or how songs are arranged so it made sense for us. Feargal is classically trained with a masters in composition from Goldsmith. He is seen as the Angel in the music whilst Eanna (barrister by day) is the Devil". On Touring, Camille says: "I've been touring for years now mostly singing Cave/Waits/Brel/ but also acting (RSC) and film work (Mrs Henderson Presents directed by Stephen Frears). In the midst of all this, we somehow managed to get on Later with Jools Holland, and subsequently supported him at the Royal Albert Hall. Over the last few years I've done my own shows in New York, Sydney Opera House and London, including 6 weeks at the West End, Royal Festival Hall and Roundhouse, as well as 8 years at Edinburgh Fringe Festival".

Camille O'Sullivan is one of those artists that is infinitely better live in performance than on recording and she has a strong and dedicated following that is easily spotted by their tendency to meow at each other! She's a star of the Edinburgh circuit and if you get the chance to see her, grab it. She covers often less known songs with a repertoire that invariably contains works by the likes of Tom Waites, Nick Cave and Jacques Brel with great feeling, original interpretation and drama.

Her latest release then is a welcome interlude for fans, but it centres largely on her passion for slower songs and sadly some of her upbeat numbers from her recent live set are missing here. Dylan's "Don't think Twice", Cave's "Oh My Lord" which both build to huge effect are conspicuously absent which is a shame as these would have given the album more variation in pace.

What we are left with though is a beautiful collection, including the fans' favorite from live shows Nick Cave's "The Ship Song". The pace of the album is slow which shows off her depth of feeling well. Stand out tracks are the opening "Revelator", the aforementioned "The Ship Song" and an interesting version of "Hurt", although the latter doesn't have quite the emotional punch of the Cash cover of the same song.

It's an often haunting collection and has a beauty to it. Perhaps she feels the more upbeat songs work better in a live format for her and there's a sense she feels more comfortable in the slower numbers. From a fan's perspective, here's hoping that there is a third live album with some of the more upbeat material in the offing soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful 18 Sep 2012

I first heard Camille O'Sullivan at the Edinburgh Fringe on BBC's Late Junction, and she was by far the highlight of a wonderful show. She was a gorgeous, warm performer who sang each song like it was the first time she was singing it. On the strength of that performance I purchased the album and have not been disappointed - it's the kind of music you might listen to on a rainy Sunday afternoon, curled up on the sofa with a glass of wine and a good book, gentle and emotive. Highly recommend it.

A fantastic singer, beautiful voice, and a beautiful album.
Can not recommend this enough
Songs are covers, but her take on them is often superior to the original....in my humble opinion

4.0 out of 5 stars The 'Dark Angel' 17 May 2012
Format:Audio CD
I'm a big fan of Camille O'Sullivan having seen her perform live in Edinburgh in her last three shows, where she is the darling of the Fringe, and at other venues around the country. Her live shows are 'not to be missed' events as she has the audience captivated by her unique whackiness, openess and rapport. Her singing's not bad either! On this, her first studio recorded album, there are the usual mix of covers from favourite artists: Tom Waits, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Radiohead et al, delivered in Camille's sultry style....all breathy, whispery at times then full-on vocals in a rich cadenza. The opening track 'Revelator' the Gillian Welch number is the perfect start. It could be about Ms O'Sullivan herself "..Queen of fakes and imitators..time's the revelator". It suits her style absolutely. Production and backing is brilliant. Loads of guitar feedback and plonky piano. The next few tracks run in the same vein: Thom Yorke's angst laden ballad 'True Love Waits', achingly and pleadingly delivered to a heartbeat percussion; Arcade Fires' classic 'Wake Up' with strings and dreamy backing and David Bowies exotic and erotic 'Lady Grinning Soul'..."she'll come, she'll go...she'll lay belief on you". It could almost be a James Bond theme song. Then follows Tom Waits' 'All the World is Green', complete with cage bird, child's piano and miaows, a typical Camille cabaret-style number. I love the sleazy jazz band interlude in this singalong song. The haunting Nick Caves' 'Brompton Oratory' is next. Such a beautiful song with just Camille and piano. There then follows the biggest disappointment to me, a reworking of Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt'. Gone is the discordant guitar introduction that set the scene of utter despair, and the usual breathy-emotional phrasing that is in her live performance is missing.... Read more ›
