I bought this book about 2 years ago, because I thought 'there must be more to life than this ordinary hum-drum', but on my own I couldn't figure out what to do with my life, or how to go about it. I started the book once and tried to do it all in 7 days, but this really is ambitious, so I ended up putting it down for a few months. It was probably the fact that I couldn't come up with an alternative that I thought 'pick it up again, give it a proper try' and this time I took my time and it worked a treat - that was 18 months ago.

That is my advice to you, give it a proper try. What Paul aims to do is simply empower YOU to change YOUR life, no one else can, will, or should, do it for you. Some other reviewer wrote 'it is no magic bullet', this is true, but nowhere does the author promise that he'll do all the work for you - if only life were that easy. All I can say is if you dedicate a little time (and regularly) to his techniques as well as listening to the CD, you will see the changes you are looking for. He is open and honest with you and reiterates that it is up to you to practise. The exercises are clear, straightforward, engaging, and after a few tries, easy to do. Paul's advice is not airy-fairy, and unlike a lot of other self help books it is not vague - the jobs he asks you to do are specific, and when you think about the exercises and the effects, they are quite logical.

However, I suggest that the title of 'change...in seven days' is a bit unrealistic. To do what he asks (and do it right) in just seven days is impossible if you have a job, a family, if you commute, or whatever. I made significant changes within 3-4 weeks, and other changes occurred simply by doing a little and often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change your life ...at your own pace 21 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I agree wholeheartedly with the rave reviews others have given this book/CD, and I second the notion that the "7 Days" part of the title is quite ambitious. But no one can predict how much reprogramming their own mind will need until the work gets under way. In my first few days of listening and reading, before I noticed any real changes in my outlook or my behaviour, I found myself looking forward to the time I would spend on this. So maybe there were changes already happening that were a bit too subtle for me to recognise them. Within about 3 weeks' time, there was no mistaking that my thought patterns were becoming more positive and now (about 3 months since I first bought the book/CD), it's clear that much of the content has stuck with me and plays itself in my head automatically.
The big message is that you can't just spend 7 days and imagine that your life is "fixed." Buy the book and CD, use it steadily for a week, then come back to it from time to time to make sure you don't take a backward slide into old ways of thinking.
The single most important thing that has stuck with me from this CD is that whatever occupies your attention most is what you will create for yourself. So you are the only one who can decide what that will be, but Paul's book and CD can certainly help make it positive and constructive.
If you find you get tired of listening to the same CD over and over (which did happen to me after about 10 days), try alternating this one with Glenn Harrold's positive thinking CD, which is a bit more relaxing. (I like Paul in the morning and Glenn at night. ;)
So off you go to change your life. Who else is going to do it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Tools 6 Jan 2006

Format:Hardcover
Yes - I thought of the hypnotic shows McKenna did on TV in the 1990s, nad thought maybe he was cashing in on his name. Not so.
First and foremost, McKenna is a psychologist, and he obviously has a very thorough understanding of practical psychology and knows how to help people develop. Further, he's done his own research and is a free-thinker. This book is a result of this great combination, and it works.
Don't be fooled into thinking you won't benefit from this sort of book unless you're unwell or unhappy. It's an all-purpose guide to improving yourself.
Some of the excercises, particularly the subliminal CD are hard to accept, but the best way is to just follow them and accept them will work - you have nothing to lose. Another drawback is perhaps the expectation that you need to set aside 60-80 mins for the CD and a chapter each day for 7 consecutive days. If you can't, do it when you can. I did it when possible, and it was effective.
The practical examples and anecdotes make the material easier to understand and make them more meaningful. The excercises are worthwhile, and are to be done, not just read about. It is genuinely a practical programme with clear objectives and a structured, useful approach. It's easily read, but not lightweight, in that there's no 'filler' material. It's all worthwhile.
I love the little quotes and facts from the people McKenna has studied. They mean a lot, and he hasn't selected them by mistake.
Human character is a fascinating subject few of us appreciate. This failure to grasp it leves many of us failing to fulfil our potential in many directions. I'm now doing things I couldn't have done years ago, partly because of help from this book.
