Chanel's Biography gets a Karl Lagerfeld Upgrade 25 Sept. 2011

I love Chanel biographies, and really enjoyed the one published in hardcover last year by Justine Picardie. The author spent ten years doing research including going to and staying at the abbey where Chanel and her sisters were abandoned by their father. Picardie was allowed access to an extraordinary amount of documents and material, including Chanel's remaining wardrobe and jewelry that her grand niece Gabrielle Palasse-Labrunie (now in her eighties) owns. Picardie also carefully researched the World War II connection between Chanel and her half English/half German lover, and her view differs from that of the authors of Sleeping with the Enemy by Hal Vaughn and CoCo Chanel by Lisa Chaney.

Karl Lagerfeld loved Picardie's book so much, that he talked to his publisher about creating a new hardback edition with his illustrations. Lagerfeld literally redesigned the book. It has a new hardcover format, new font, illustrations, and what amounts to an additional fifty pages in the book. There is also a very flimsy paper slipcase over the book (they could have spent more money and done that right.)

If you already purchased Picardie's original hardcover a year ago, or just want to read the biography in paperback, then you can pass this one by.

If you have not bought the biography and collect Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld books, then pick up this limited edition. You will be glad you did.

If your interested in Gabrielle's whole life story and beginning I would suggest this book to you. It's bright and a well written book, Picardie has another book 'Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life,' this book is more about what Chanel has done, and the impact she made. Overall, this is a good book to read in your spare time.

added this book to my tabletop collection of favorite books. It is not a large photo type book, but I will look forward to reading in the near future, as I love Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld creations!
