Review

From the reviews of THE CHANCERS:'A sharp black comedy. A neatly understated exploration of success, failure and male sexuality.' MAXIM'Lanigan's take on celebrity culture is very funny.' DAILY MIRROR'Extraordinary ... genuinely relevant and very, very funny. He has an Amis-like eye for short, sharp, new language.' TIME OUTFrom the reviews of STRETCH, 29:'Lit by some truly fine writing and observation. [It] has moments of Dickensian greatness.' INDEPENDENT'Frank Stretch, the hero of this entertaining novel... is as original and affecting as Billy Liar or Lucky Jim were to previous generations.' FHM

Product Description

A failed actor has one last chance at success -- in this razor-sharp satirical novel from the acclaimed author of STRETCH, 29. Hailed by the Observer as 'brilliantly funny, a dazzling performance, teeming with invention, wicked humour and unforced insights' and by the Daily Mirror as 'heartbreakingly funny', STRETCH, 29, Damian Lanigan's story of the downward-spiralling life of serial under-achiever Frank Stretch, established him as one of the most distinctive voices of a new generation of British comic writers. Now, in THE CHANCERS, his new hero is struggling to escape the modern obsession with fame...Patrick Moon used to have all the fame he could handle. Playing Macbeth fresh out of RADA, he was the darling of the West End when he fell in love with novelist Susie Fisher. Eight years later, the spotlight has moved on, Patrick is permanently 'resting', the golden couple is badly in need of a polish and he can't even perform in the bedroom. Worst of all, Susie now writes a column exposing the intimate details of their crumbling relationship. Then a role in a small-budget film offers him a chance to rise again. But will he blow it the second time around?

5.0 out of 5 stars dont judge it by its cover, 29 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Chancers (Paperback)
On the surface The Chancers seems to be just another enjoyable read, but after discussing the book in depth with a friend who also enjoyed the book, we believe we uncovered the true voice of the story. Truly astonishing. We didnt like the cover and format of the book, it belies the true genius within. I srongly recommend reading this book, not once, but twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Bloke Read, 26 July 2005
By A. Marczak "mazzarak" (Didcot) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Perhaps I've read too many "bloke" books recently. Too much Mil Millington, Richard Asplin, Nick Hornby, Tony Hawks, Dave Gorman. But this one was ... I dunno... just a book. It's not a rip roaring rollercoaster, its not side splitting humour. It's enjoyable, its funny, its occasionally insightful and moving, but its also forgettable, and samey.

Having said that, if you are male and looking for a book to kill a few days whilst catching some rays, you could do a lot worse.
