Product Description

In a few short years Laurel Halo has demonstrated an unnerving ability to question established idioms in electronic music. Throughout her body of work the Michigan-born producer has expressed musical representations of merged dualities; spirituality in the inorganic, space in the claustrophobic, hope in dread. As a result there's something uncanny about Laurel Halo's sound - the sonic templates may change, but the challenging of divides remains. Laurel Halo returns to LP format after two critically acclaimed EPs with the driving, meditative 'Chance Of Rain'. Evolving from earlier works, it's a cerebral exploration of the intersection between rhythmic and ambient music, drawing together moments of movement and stillness, psychedelia and presence of mind. On 'Chance Of Rain', rhythms melt with unpredictable structures, ambient drift and deep harmonic passages, while keyboard-based interludes reinforce both the far-out and contemplative aspects of the record as a whole. Halo's evolution as a live performer has directed her music's development in part, as the tracks on Chance Of Rain are fleshed out versions of live hardware improvisations. This LP is far off from the definition of a traditional dance long player; where tracks like Serendip , Chance Of Rain and Ainnome invite with infectious grooves, others like Oneiroi , Still/Dromos and Thrax invert these energies, revealing sinister potential in the process. Again Halo's knack for illusory detail and sound design shines, and another duality feeling emerges, this time one of unearthly joy. Drawing inspiration from the music of her home state's music capital Detroit, in both harmonic and rhythmic palettes, the music showcases freedom within metric constructs, and skyward optimism in the face of decay. The album comes packaged with artwork created by her father, an NYC-born, Michigan-based visual artist whose work focuses on industrial landscapes of Michigan and the Rust Belt at large. The artwork here is an early work of his from the 1970s, reflecting the album's twisted, hopeful tone. 'Chance Of Rain' was mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

but it is a dissappointing one.

After enjoying the Hour Logic EP a couple of years ago, and, although I like many struggled with the dry, dissonant, vocals of Quarantine, I still found that album interesting if difficult to consume. Even her Behind the Green Door EP from earlier this year had it's moments.

Unfortunately, I can't get into this one. I first track I heard from it was Ainnome, which I liked, especially the Ken Ishii jelly Tones pitch bent synths, so I decided to give the album a go. First track, a nice little Fender Rhodes sounding improv, about 30 minutes of ambient techno, then Ainnome, and a nice little jazzy piano improv to end. I listened to it a couple more times but still the same general impression, maybe Still/Dromos grew on me a bit. There is nothing to dislike here, nothing jarring or irritating but not much that stands out either. it's not ambient techno, it's AMBIENT techno, and when the beat is somewhat sacrificed in these dance/not-dance pieces, interest needs to come from other areas. I think that's my main gripe, that it seems too subdued and even safe.

It's a perfectly decent album, and I can see why people love it, but when there is so much undanceable (not in a pejorative sense) Basic Channel-inspired techno around now, i think a release has to be extra special to stand out. I do think Laurel Halo has talent there but as yet it's manifestations haven't connected with me.

In a similar vein is Huerco S' Colonial Patterns which came out around the same time as Chance of Rain. I found this release much more to my liking.

Her finest work yet 22 Dec. 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The most interesting take on ambient dance and UK/Detroit techno I've heard this year. The atmosphere is somehow very bleak, malevolent and off-putting upon first listen, but it grew on me throughout the year. The album's like a love letter to the music that has inspired her down the years, but instead of serving up some cheap pastiche of her influences, she reconstructs them, blackens them with soot, and allows them to take on a surreal and eerily beautiful life of their own.

There's a kind of aural mustiness hanging over it all that might be compared to a dusty attic or a crawlspace. Loops of piano passages fold into techno drum-beat fractions, sneezes and mid-syllables to flesh out unnatural, but oddly human grooves. The music is at once disorienting, entrancing, bewildering, and strangely elegant--all qualities that could accurately describe the entirety of the album.

Chance of Rain shows Laurel Halo at the peak of her powers, realizing her enigmatic vision with a newfound brazenness. Nearly all of its 9 tracks are among her finest and most memorable to date. I'm looking forward to her future releases.
