Product Description

Synopsis

Rhae Elliott and her husband Keith did what most of us imagine doing when watching the TV programmes telling the stories of people who sell up and leave all familiar things to start life in a new country. They made the decision to move to Central France making the dream of a life abroad a reality. After several visits investigating different areas of France they bought a wonderful 200-year-old farmhouse and dilapidated cottage in the Berry Creuse region and began a new life. In a year they redecorated the farmhouse, renovated the cottage and ran a successful gite business. The story tells of the necessary steps to get health cover, problems with local builders and dealings at the Maire. It tells of marathon lunches and continues with tales of visits to local fetes. It explains the difficulties encountered mastering the language and the way the British network to help each other in a Foreign Land.

From the Inside Flap

There are also pictures of visits to local towns and villages, fetes, street markets and brocantes. This web site also contains some handy links when looking to visit or live in Central France.

3.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable - but not exceptional - account of life in France, 15 April 2007
By Mr. S. Wright "Siinq8" (Kuwait) - See all my reviews

I must admit I do partially agree with the other reviewer who only gave this book one star in that this book really does have a self published feel to it. That's blatantly apparent by the lack of proof reading - basic grammatical errors occur throughout the book and the style of writing does make it feel a bit like someones personal diary. However, in it's defence, such style of writing does give the book a kind of innocent charm - as if the author is personally sharing their personal experience with the reader alone.

The author gives a nice, light-hearted insight into life for Brits new to life in France, accurately describing the mannerisms of the French (as well as the English when they are abroad). My biggest complaint about this book is it gives a bit too much detail on the more mundane aspects of daily life of the author - trips DIY shops are mentioned repeatedly!!

Overall though, not a bad read. There are far better books available on this subject but there are far worse ones too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 28 Oct 2006

I'm afraid I disagree with all previous reviews.. probably because I am neither related to or a friend of the author...
The quality of writing is no more advanced than 'Janet and John' and the content didn't offer any real insight into the highs and lows of 'taking the plunge' and moving to France. I wish it had been made clear that this is a SELF-PUBLISHED book.

5.0 out of 5 stars french connections, 29 April 2009
By Eagle Owl (Lincolnshire, England) - See all my reviews
I have recently been in contact with Roger Bourner. He said he thought this book was fascinating he said he would like to write a review but couldn't seem to manage to do so. Simon Singer, the gentleman who now owns the gite mentioned in the story, found the book very helpful. He and his family use the gite as a holiday home and have visited many of the places mentioned. They found the directions and descriptions very accurate. They have also met the characters, wined and dined at the hostelries and visited the historical places of interest. There is a web site showing the places mentioned in the book []
