Having been a fan of the Championship Manager series since the days of Championship Manager 2 all the way back in the 95/96 season it disappoints me that I now have to change my allegiance.I have been quite contented with the 01/02 version of the game but decided it was time for an update, but I find with this new and updated version that everything that made Championship Manager great has been taken away. The editor has been removed, one of the best parts of the old game was being able to create your own players or update the database to keep it accurate. Anyone wishing to manage a nation, which is likely considering the season being a World Cup year will be disappointed as this has also been axed. To make things even worse you can now only manage ONE team, the best feature about the CM series was being able to manage several good teams and your home town club. I remember playing 97/98 with my brother and cousin where we were all a club and it was a contest who could win the league, but alas this is no more. All this is replaced with a ridiculous in match chess game which bears little resemblance to what is actually going on, while many flaws remain such as dominating the side for the whole game but losing 1-0 after the CPU team has just one shot in 90 minutes, and the curious fact that every goalkeeper seems to have had both arms and legs amputated. Whilst navigating through the game is infruirating and tedious While the benefactor update and the ability to actually talk to your players properlly rather than just fining them every now and then is a great idea there are far too many things that made the Champ Manager series the best football management game going. Avoid this game.

CM wins again!,

I bought this game on the recommendation of a friend after skipping CM 2005 - and find it every bit as addictive as the champmans of old! It has a few strange quirks with transfers but is nowhere near as buggy as previous versions, and has two killer features; you're never locked out of the game and can while away your time doing whatever you like as the game progresses, and the speed of it makes it zip along on my very ordinary pc. So gone are the days of watching the telly or reading a paper while you wait for a heavy match day to be processed!!! The detail and realism are everything you would expect of a top footy management game, and it has been pitched nicely between too easy (you need to get the tactics right and make sure you respond to your opponents) and too hard (lots of opportunity to let the assistant take training or make suggestions, and straightforward if no-nonsense interface).

It's not FM, but it's not bad,

Ok, so Sports Interactive and Eidos split a couple of years back and SI took the old Championhip Manager engine with them. No doubt FM05 and FM06 have both been brilliant games, and SI are still doing a great job. Championship Manager however is still out there, and this latest version isn't a bad game. It has some nice features and runs quite well (despite what I saw in another review, I'm running 20+ leagues and it's running fast). It's a strange choice to release a football management game so close to the end of the football season, and realism takes a bit of a hit as all transfers from the January 2006 transfer window are included, meaning you start the 05/06 season with them in your team. Having played this game though, I enjoyed it. It's not as good as FM06 is, but then FM06 is a fantastic game. Championship Manager 2006 is a good game, and great if you want an alternative to Football Manager 2006.
