It is clear that Benitez had amassed an extraordinary knowledge of European and World football, even before he was offered the chance to succeed Gerrard Houllier as Liverpool manager halfway through 2004. He recalls : "I knew that Liverpool Football Club was special. I did not know quite how special until I arrived"; and acknowledges that "the fans were warm and welcoming from my very first day"; and looking back after it was all over admits that "the memories I have of my time at Anfield are ones I will always cherish".Read more ›
I am biased as I am a big fan of the Rafalution with a serious man crush on Rafa. Despite this, the book provides a glimpsed of how detailed and difficult the manager's job is especially in a club like Liverpool. Cannot recommend this enough. Best football...(ah ok Liverpool FC centric) memoir/autobiography I have read to date.
The bitter comes from the fact that all of this happened just a few years ago, and the club is now a former shadow of what it was under Benitez. It leaves you thinking 'what if'. What if he was given the transfer funds to buy that one last piece of the jigsaw that surely would have toppled United off their perch, what if the Americans didn't take over the club in 2007. What if Benitez was still in charge now, as it's clear he feels he has unfinished business.
What is clear reading this book is that Benitez will go down in Liverpool folklore as the man that gave the club it's pride back, that won the greatest club competition with the most remarkable of comebacks, that will never be forgotten. A must for any Liverpool fan!
Rafa Benítez shows an incredible good memory and an attention to details that set him apart from many other coaches. After reading this book you will understand the reasons behind the decisions Rafa, the Boss, made in spite of lack of support from his superiors.
Anyone could argue that this narrative is his side of the story; that there is no account from those who have criticized his every decision at the time; but time will prove, as it has been obvious to those who praise him, that Benítez is unique, a genius.
In the end Champion League Dreams explains why the dreams of so many in Liverpool became a reality. And just for that simple reason, it is a must read! But, why, why did you want to pinch yourself and wake up by showing him the door. I would never understand letting him go.
