It's not easy to hit a target when you aren't sure what exactly your quarry looks—or sounds—like. Don't misunderstand: Liam Finn knew what he and co-producer Burke Reid wanted to accomplish with FOMO, the follow-up to the New Zealand dynamo's 2008 breakout I'll Be Lighting. But they also recognized that capturing that je nais sais quoi that makes or breaks ... Read more in Amazon's Liam Finn Store

BBC Review

While Liam Finn’s debut album of last year, I’ll Be Lightning, attracted its fair share of acclaim, the Australian was weighed down by the duality of being a dizzyingly frenetic live performer but something of a straightforward singer-songwriter on record.

Utilising an array of loops, and showcasing his awesome drumming skills, on stage Finn never disappointed; but by witnessing the man in the flesh before hearing his recorded wares, this writer for one was left a little less impressed than was expected. Yet for this new six-track offering, the eldest son of Crowded House’s Neil Finn has chosen to explore sounds that, largely, gently caress the synapses rather than bludgeon their way into one’s affections, as was the case with previous performances.

Opener Plane Crash does provide a brief blast of bluster, but it spends much of its three-and-something minutes lolloping its way to said explosion of volume. When it fades down to silence, Long Way to Go replaces its boisterousness with a confident swagger that suits its maker well – think the work of his father given a layer of cockiness and just a little funk in the track’s catchy rhythm. From here onwards, though, Champagne in Seashells leaves the amplifiers in the splitter and sets out to entertain with a hush rather than a holler.

Honest Face is as close to Wilco – who Finn will soon tour with – as any Australian act has come, for better or worse: evocative as it is, you might be tempted to replace this disc with the genuine article. Won’t Change My Mind is a sumptuous, prog-touched piece that acts as the mini-album’s fulcrum – to one side, the artist’s brash cacophonies; the other, his understated offerings. On Your Side is this release’s most-tender track, a duet with regular collaborator Eliza-Jane Barnes, whose delicate tones are matched perfectly with Finn’s own.

The drones-and-samples textural wash of closer Captain Cat is Crying is a delightful Atlas Sound-style way to end this too-brief preview of where Finn may head next, stylistically. Clearly a significant step onwards from the arrangements of his decent debut album, Champagne in Seashells is a reminder that there’s much more to Finn than your garden variety singer-songwriter. He might be celebrated primarily for his shows, but his is a talent evidently ambitious in the studio, too. --Mike Diver

In the hinterland between a full album sandwich, this 1,000 only limited edition EP is a very welcome filling of tasty morsels. I do think we could have been spared the "Under Milkwood" sound collage at Track 6 though. That is off-the-map and not in a good way. However, negatives aside, The other five tracks are more than satisfying and with a couple of real fine standouts. I will leave that to the personal taste of others to determine which songs they are! Above all, this short collection of new songs is a definite grower. Like "I'll Be Lightning" a first listen sounds like good stuff though business as usual and doesn't pack an immediate punch. Subsequent listening reveals that charismatic Liam Finn magic and he is clearly the uneasy saviour of creative, experimental pop-rock. Actually, it is unfair to even categorise him. But he is more than halfway to greatness already. It would have been a definite five stars if not for the completely unnecessary track 6.

This was one of the best discoveries of the year for me. Eliza-Jane takes this up a whole level in her great harmonies. Songs are haunting and catchy - as you would expect from a Finn. I can't wait for more from these two.

OKAY, everyone seems to be freaking out because Amazon slipped you a nondescript folk-rocky tune while you were unsuspectingly updating your Amazon downloader. Amazon does this to test the installer and make sure your downloader is working. Yeah, shame on Amazon for not letting you know what they were up to, but CHILL, you weren't charged anything, and if you don't like the song just DELETE IT. Aaright? Now go listen to something good... -- DJ Arnoldo

Be nice! 3 Aug. 2012

Poor guys don't deserve the hate. It's a decent track especially for the low price of free and I could see certain people really liking this. It really doesn't deserve five stars but it also doesn't deserve one star so consider my extra star in compensation for some of the others.

Glad Amazon gave this to me 20 Jun. 2012

I too was concerned when the pop-up box said I purchased 'Honest Face' by Liam Finn and Eliza Jane. I backed out of it but then was curious. I typed it in the search box and listened to the samples. I loved them! I purchase all of them including the free one-Honest Face. It's my kind of music so I was delighted that Amazon gave it to me and for free. Thanks Amazon!

I saw Liam Finn and Eliza Jane in Memphis and was instantly captured by their energy and creativity on stage. I'm happy that same energy translates well to this recording. It is clear that Liam has inherited a great deal of talent from his family. He shows it off well with a mastery of the guitar and various electronic gizmos to enhance his talent.

Free Song Download w/Update to Amazon MP3 Downloader 20 April 2012
By jesusfreak68 - Published on Amazon.com
First, for all those who are p*ssed about getting this download without consent, it's a free download for updating the Amazon MP3 Downloader program. As such none of us should be charged.

If you don't want the free song, choose "cancel" on the screen that says "Amazon MP3 Downloader Installed" at the top in orange follwed by "You've successully installed the Amazon MP3 Downloader....."

For those of you who like the 80's techno pop with an updated twist, you may like the song "Honest Face", which is the song that downloaded to my machine. I'm not into much of the old 80's techno pop music anymore so this isn't a song that I will listen to much, however my teen likes it. :) The song is cute, it's fresh...I just can't get into that synthesizer sound, so I gave it 3/5 stars. For what it's worth, I won't be deleting it from my machine but I also won't have it on my frequently played playlists either.
