Product Description

Review

a brilliant compendium of bizarre occurrences

(Richard Morrison, The Times 20070829)

sceptical, witty, intelligent and ravenous for mystery

(Gary Dexter, The Daily Telegraph 20071030)

It is a catalogue of the inexplicable, an A-Z of mystery... It is a pleasure to immerse oneself in a book which, on almost every page, throws up something of peculiar interest.

(Jon Barnes, Times Literary Supplement 20080409)

The compilers of the dictionary have adopted a gentle, judicious, sometimes jaunty tone... The entries... represent the full range of positions from the hostile sceptic to the credulous believer. They have tried to operate without bias, avoid empty speculation and run to earth misconceptions, and they have cross-referenced liberally and cleverly.

(Hilary Mantel, London Review of Books )

an ideal gift for anyone interested in crop circles, Scientology or even the Black Dog of Bungay.

(Mark Sanderson, The Daily Telegraph )

A great one-stop shop for Forteans... [the editors] should be congratulated for attempting to create a one-volume reference work that casts its net across such vast, stormy seas of the improbable and imponderable and spreads out the variegated catch in an ordered manner. The 1,250 entries ... are admirably balanced and succinct.

(David Sutton, Fortean Times )

Absolutely everyone who has an interest in the paranormal should have a copy of this fascinating and enlightening book on their bookshelf!

(Jacky Newcomb )

packed with fab facts about all things odd and scary

(The Daily Star )

It is a chunky volume and a well made book, a thing of beauty in its own right, with easy on the eye text and plenty of illustrations... it is ideal as a gateway book, that invaluable first port of call for any investigation of the paranormal, supernatural and related matters. There’s also, as with many reference books, a sense of the serendipitous about it, a combination of the very things you expect to find and some that maybe you don’t, the volume casting a wider net than the scope of your enquiry may have allowed and delivering up intriguing if unexpected pieces of information, as for instance in the entries for ‘H.P. Lovecraft’ and ‘The Necronomicon’.

(Black Static #4 )

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for reference and browsing., 28 Sep 2008
By Daniel Delahoyde "Book Browser" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent reference book and also a very informative and entertaining general interest book on the unexplained and paranormal. The title is a bit misleading, it is a dictionary, in that articles are sorted alphabetically, but there's also lots of photos, illustrations and feature pieces on many topics. So it's almost an encylopedia as much as a dictionary. Open it on any page and you'll find an interesting article. Chambers have created a microsite specially for this book that will give you a flavour of whats inside. I found it very helpful to know the books layout and style before I purchased.

This book fitted my needs perfectly. It's a one-stop shop where I can quickly get the facts on a particular topic, and also read more detailed articles about a wide range of subjects. Beautifully presented and authoritatively written it's a great addition to any home or office bookshelf. It would make a great gift for any fan of the unexplained and paranormal as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book-Shame About The Cover!, 13 Aug 2008
By Cryptoresearcher (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Anybody with the slightest interest in the occult or paranormal would be well advised to at least peruse this book-it has so many interesting entries on other topics that you soon become thoroughly engrossed.

My only gripe is the abysmal cover illustration that gives no clue as to the contents-the Art Director should be ashamed for using such a boring cover picture-not likely to draw in a casual reader who spots it on a shelf. And what a great book they would miss.

A totally entertaining reference guide with longer articles by highly qualified authorities-you can hop from entry to entry and never be bored.
