Product Description

Review

One of the things that makes people suspicious of people of other faiths is lack of knowledge and understanding. This is a quick and accurate way of finding out more, and it should make people feel closer to others of different backgrounds.

(Baroness Neuberger DBE )

Product Description

Even in our high-tech world, billions of people continue to place their faith in a god, or gods, in spirits or in another form of divinity. Many adhere to beliefs outside the major faith traditions, while others see science and secular modernity as providing a sufficient basis for a meaningful life.

The new Chambers Dictionary of Beliefs and Religions contains more than 3,200 entries ranging from Catholicism to Shariah law, doomsday cults to eco-paganism and from yogic flying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It looks at what followers of the world s major religions, cults and fringe religions believe, how these faiths started and examines what happens when ancient faiths and the modern world collide, as in stem cell research or the teaching of creationism in schools. Fascinating and illuminating, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in how belief shapes our world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have', 24 Sep 2009
By Rev. J. Vernon - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For any thinking person asking serious questions about the issues of our day and matters of belief this new edition of Chambers Dictionary of Beliefs and Religions is a 'must have'. It is an invaluable reference book to have readily at hand. I particularly enjoy browsing through the illuminating special 'panels' on current issues and controversies in religion and belief. Buy it now (or put it on your Christmas 'wish list').
