Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

At first listen, the narration of this abridged version of John Grisham's The Chamber seems flat and uninvolved. But Michael Beck has chosen his vocal style well, purposely eschewing unnecessary adornment and allowing this searing indictment of racism and murder to unfold on its own terms. Beck uses character voices sparingly, adding subtle emphasis to the already charged plot. The story begins with a Klan-sponsored bombing and then traces a trail of rigged acquittals stretching over three decades, until a young lawyer with secrets of his own brings the case to a powerful conclusion. --George Laney Amazon.com --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

Product Description

Adam Hill is 26 years old and in his first year at a top Chicago law firm. He volunteers for the toughest assignment any lawyer could ask for. His prospective client doesn't want Adam or his law firm. He is an unrepentant and outspoken racist with a violent past. He is on Death Row for the murder of two Jewish children in a horrific bombing in 1967. Why would he take on Adam, a complete novice, to defend him? And why would Adam want his case so desperately? The answer lies in the past, in a twenty-year-old secret buried in the madness of another time...

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting, thought-provoking and gripping., 15 Aug 2005
I thoroughly enjoyed this book: it was exciting, thought-provoking and gripping. It was, at times, predictably depressing and sad, although at others it was unexpectedly funny. It seemed, more often than not, that I was present while everything was going on. It was, in short, a fantastic, memorable and highly worthwhile read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite disappointing for a longtime Grisham addict!, 21 April 2000
By A Customer
The story follows the realisation of Adam Hall's lifelong quest to defend his grandfather, a 1960s Klu Klux Klan member who killed 2 children in one of his bombings who is on Death Row awaiting his imminent execution. However, as time goes on and it gets nearer to the execution Adam discovers the true horror behind his hushed family history. When I stumbled on this book in the bookstore I thought I had found gold - one of the few Grisham books I hadnt as yet devoured. The book turned out to be a sour grape. The plot dragged on and on. It became painfully clear how the book would end long before the end came in sight. Unlike the other books, there is not as much legal nitty-gritty as there is in his other books which made the book seem empty to me. There was nothing to really sink your teeth into.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Grisham novel to date, 2 Jan 2007
By Jay "The Amazon Reviewer" (Mauritius) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The first time I heard of John Grisham is when I saw the trailer for the "The Firm". I had just seen "A Few Good Men", and wondered to myself, OH NO not another movie where Tom Cruise plays the lawyer. To my surprise, the story was really good even if the ending was altered. I thought to myself that this author/scriptwriter must have written other books. Why not have a peek at one of them . That particular "peek" was "The Chamber", and now shortly afterwards, here I am writing this online review. The relationship between Adam and Sam is really well penned. It just shows that bad seeds don't exist, there is always a time for redemption be it intra or inter generation. Pity that the film wasn't that good.
