Product Description

Communication, Summer 2001

Its strength lies in the author's ability to offer common sense practical that can be followed on a daily basis.

Book Description

This book is for parents, teachers and carers of youngsters with autistic spectrum disorders. Written in a jargon free style, it offers practical strategies for preventing or managing the commonest sorts of challenging behaviour. The book's core message can be summed up in a single sentence: to change a child's behaviour you need to be able to make sense of that behaviour - and making sense of that behaviour means making sense of the child's autism.

Great if you have the time, energy and determination to spend 2 weeks writing down your child's tantrum times, reasons, surroundings, weather conditions and pulse rate. OK, yes I'm exagerating, but this book will make you feel a failure, because you can't do all that they suggest. And if you don't do all that they suggest then you are led to believe that finding a solution to your childs problem will never be found.
If you are struggling - don't get this book - find a self help group with other parents. You will learn more and you will build up a help network. Stay positive

I love this book. I found it to be one of the best books to recommend to new teachers and parents regarding autism and challenging behavior. Every time I recommend it, people contact me and let me know how really helpful it is.
