Product Description

Book Description

The moving story of a Kashmiri boy soldier, from a prize-winning Irish author.

Product Description

It’s an ordinary morning at nine-year-old Rafiq’s school in rural Kashmir when the silence of dawn prayers is ripped apart by gunfire. Soldiers of the Kashmir Freedom Fighters have raided the village in search of new recruits – they scrawl a line in chalk across the schoolroom wall, and any boy whose height reaches the line will be taken to fight. Rafiq is tall for his age – the first boy to cross the chalkline into a life of brutality and terrorism. This is the story of Rafiq’s transformation from child to boy soldier, as he is indoctrinated into the cause of fanatical belief. But his family have not forgotten him; when he can no longer recognize himself, they remember the boy he was, and reach out a hand of redemption as he spirals towards a final act of atrocity.

An excellent book 18 July 2009
A real page turner, beautifully written and totally captivating. Just completed reading this book and have gone without sleep to reach the ending, well worth it. Fingers crossed there will be a sequel or other works by this author.

I read this book as part of a book club for a teachers group and it has stayed with me since. It is hard hitting but children being kidnapped and radicalised/ groomed/ turned into rebel soldiers is a hard hitting reality of the world we live in. I would recommend it for teenagers and above; its the kind of book which needs some unpacking, not because the language is inaccessible - quite the contrary - it is vivid and easy to get into - but because there are moments which need talking about. It is an excellent book, which should be bought and read widely. The storytelling is skilled and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last.

A brilliant read 26 Mar 2010
I have just completed 'Chalkline' and thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautifully written it was a real page turner and hard to put down. It follows Rafiq, nine years old and from a small Kashmiri village, as he is brutally taken from his homeland and trained by Kashmiri freedom fighters to shoot and lay mines. Rafiq is taught to quickly make the transition from boy to man, and this inludes many hard decisions, but will the last one he makes, when he has lost everone, be the right one?
