Book Description

Read about the escapades of Chalk, a barrister who's unorthodox methods cause mayhem for himself and all around him.

What readers have said:

"Rather P. G. Wodehouse in style. Hilarious and excellent."

"A very funny book following the trials and tribulations of a hapless barrister, this enjoyable book was made all the better by the author's first-rate knowledge of courtroom procedure."

"Funny and farcical, it would translate well into a TV series."

"As a pupil barrister Chalk had my interest. There was a touch of Tom Sharpe about the goings on in chambers and court that had a similar humour."

A #3 best selling Amazon.co.uk book in its ebook comedy category.

4.0 out of 5 stars charmingly funny.....Rumpole's successor? 17 May 2011
By Musicfan TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't usually read comedies but this involved lawyers and I thought it worth a go. Barristers always make good material for drama....and comedy.......This book managed to be laugh out loud funny at times. Witty, intelligent and charming. If you like Rumpole you will enjoy this. Rumpole has a successor! Recommended.

Format:Kindle Edition
What a great read!
I really liked the style in which Chalk is written. It certainly captivated me...one of those books you really cannot put down. I particularly liked the way the characters are developed throughout the book, it is really well balanced and full of humour.
Well worth a look... you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking read 15 Jun. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My first foray in to the world of ebooks, and what a happy one it was!

I found Chalk to be a great page turner, which i just wasn't able to put down. Laugh out loud funny in places, and able to make me keep a smile on my face throughout.

I thoroughly enjoyed his courtroom antics, and would certainly recommend that you do too!

5.0 out of 5 stars My ribs hurt! 8 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't normally read comedy... but from the first chapter, this book had me laughing so hard my eyes watered and ribs hurt. I won't say why - as I wouldn't want to ruin the moments for anyone else. I have chuckled many times since, thinking about events which took place!

I was very impressed with the way Chalks character develops through the book, despite the humour and his antics, he is very believable and the type of character which fills your imagination.

I guess the thing I liked the most about this book, was the balance. While the book was hilariously funny, it was informative too - I had no clue how courts / barristers operated.

It is rare to find a book which makes me laugh out loud, Chalk did and I'd highly recommend to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Funny Book 14 Mar. 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very funny book following the trials and tribulations of a hapless barrister, this enjoyable book was made all the better by the authors first-rate knowledge of courtroom procedure. This was an excellent read, well worth a five star rating. I am looking forward to reading the next instalment on this fascinating character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chalk 27 Jan. 2013

As a pupil barrister Chalk had my interest. There was a touch of Tom Sharpe about the goings on in chambers and court that had a similar humour. Chalk would make a great pupil supervisor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tom Sharpe lite 8 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you're going to buy this book hoping for a detailed and suspenseful courtroom thriller, then you're going to be disappointed. However, if you're hoping for a good laugh and some nice light reading, then this is just the book for you. If you're thinking that this book is an extreme bargain, then that is because it is in fact very short. I read Kindle the version so I'm not sure of exactly how many pages, but I would imagine the paperback version is little more than 100 pages. The plotline to this book is totally unrealistic, but I'm sure realism is not the intention. Right from the off I was reminded of the Tom Sharpe novels I have read, with the lead character seemingly unable to get himself out of increasingly difficult, embarrassing, but sometimes very funny situations.

This book is certainly well worth the read especially if you're hoping for a bit of a laugh.

4.0 out of 5 stars A genuine court room farce 26 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are looking for Rumpole mark II, this is not for you. Thankfully so since John Mortimer cannot be bettered. But Chalk is a quite different kind of barrister. Extraordinarily successful in his trials, this is due entirely to his amoral farcical incompetence. So there is no great assertion of the grand principles of justice, but instead a thoroughly enjoyable romp through the work days of a complete idiot, with no small dash of slap-stick. This is the legal world of yesterday where the clerk is still called `Arry' and `ladies of the night' still call potential clients `deary'. This is a novel simply to enjoy, to laugh along with. Comparisons, not unreasonably, have been made with Tom Sharpe. If that's your thing, it's worth a try.
