90`s BBC comedy at is best,

Okay, at fist the idea seems dumb - How funny can a comedy about a school be?The answer - Very,very,very funny Ok it looses it around the middle of the second series , but I think the BBC should be applauded for 10 epsoades of class, rather then 2 filled with rubbish. Its a moot point anyway, since the second series hasn`t been released on video yet (and knowing the beeb, never will be) In a way, Chalk reminds me of a modern day Fawlty Towers, with the same larger-then-life charcters who never seem to do anything majorley wrong, yet still get into the strangest situations, with Depuety head Eric Slatt getting into trouble as easily as John Cleese ever did. If it wasn`t for `Coupling`, Chalk would rank as the best BBC comedy of the ninties, and if nothing else, beats watching those endless re-runs of Friends

Long overdue for DVD release.,

This was a very funny series, but like a number of others it's somehow never found it's way onto DVD (Simon Nye's series "Beast" starring Alex Armstrong and Doon Machichan(sp) is another prime example). Given some of the dross that's out on DVD one wonders who makes these choices... 8-)
Set in a school, this series casts David Bamber as a manic deputy head trying in his own dysfunctional way to keep the school up to his somewhat strange repressed and outmoded standards. It has rightly been called "Fawlty Towers goes to school" but it also has enough invention of its own to make it more than a knock-off. Steven Moffat wrote it, prior to his Doctor Who involvement I think. Each episode is a sweaty palms ride with one disaster building on another, and not all of it is "on message" for our politically correct age, but for the most part it's all the better for that! Replay video have released the first series on DVD now and you can buy it direct from them, but I'm surprised Amazon's not selling it by now? Alan T

Steven Moffat wrote Chalk between Joking Apart and Coupling. Two series were broadcast in 1997, and it is great that, eleven years later, the first is now available on DVD. The commentaries on all six episodes are interesting, but it is the 45-minute documentary that provides an informative watch.
