First, imagine two discs of great vocal splendor from this "greatest of all singers" (certainly, at least, basses), and further take into fact that they are to be had for less than the cost of an average recording today. And, do not make ANY mistake, these are just not "average" recordings in any shape or form! They are great historical pictures of this great Russian basso, both in acoustic and early electronic recordings, lovingly restored by Ward Marston so that one can really hear them as close as possible to how Chaliapin sounded in person. I loved George London, I loved Nicolai Ghiaurov, among others, but all pale before this greatest of all bassos, and you can hear it here in these wonderful restored recordings, presented by Naxos' great people, who have indeed given so many great recordings back to us through their comprehensive issues and re-issues of historic recordings from the past.
If you can only add one or two historic sets to your collection, I certainly would urge you to make one of them this magnificently restored and produced set and also Fedor Chaliapine: Russian Opera Arias from EMI. Both rightly deserve space taken up on your shelves of "great recordings" that you will guaranteed return to often.
