Amazon.co.uk Review

When tough-minded sculptor Sam Jones wakes up handcuffed and chained in a cellar full of damp and cockroaches, she spends the hours between Nescafé and vegemite sandwiches trying to work out how she has got here. Chained! is another outing for Henderson's incident-prone heroine, one in which she is as far from the conventional woman-in-peril as it is possible to be without being superhuman. It all starts when she gets a job as technical consultant on a television thriller starring her rather camp boyfriend Hugo, and finds herself caught up in the affairs of actress Sarah, for whom she is performing the welding bits of Sarah's role. Sarah has robust views, vigorously expressed, about the wearing of fur, and has become the target of Animal Rights Groups' hate mail and malicious practical jokes on set--it seems obvious to Sam that she has been mistaken for Sarah. Freed, she helps the police, but also puts her own investigation into play. As always, Henderson is as funny about subcultural milieux--actors, animal-rights people--as she is about her foul-mouthed, mildly predatory heroine; this is an excellent comedy thriller which is both exciting and entertaining. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Sam, sculptor, amateur detective, and all round good time girl, starts her latest escapade chained to the ceiling of a dank cellar. No, it's not a wild night gone wrong, she's a prisoner with nothing to eat but Vegemite sandwiches. The action disconcertingly switches to a long prologue to Sam's incarceration. She's working on a film set as a stand in for Sarah, an actor who is playing a sculptor. Sarah resembles Sam quite a bit, and is playing opposite Sam's latest squeeze, the handsome Hugo. The scene setting goes on just a little bit too long, but eventually the action kicks in. As always, the dialogue is lively, the characters colourful, and Sam herself is reluctantly involved in murder and intrigue. Henderson manages to make her femme fatale independent and hard-hitting, yet realistically vulnerable both to a handsome man who knows how to push her love buttons, and a well-aimed 14-hole Dr Marten in the small of her back. The plot will keep you guessing, and the denouement is climatic, but if criticisms must be made, there are perhaps too many minor characters to keep track of, and a lot of irrelevant small talk: you feel like you know the crew, but you don't really care. Overall though, a fast-paced, light-hearted thriller. (Kirkus UK)

Handcuffs may be among sculptor Samantha Jones's favorite toys, but not when they're shackling her to the ceiling in some nasty cellar God knows where. That's how the animal rights fanatics have squirreled her away, though, after mistaking her for Sarah Fossett, the meat-eating, fur-wearing actress who's got the role portraying Sam ("Strawberry Tattoo", 2000, etc.) in the six-part BBC gangster miniseries "Driven". Sam is badly beaten but eventually escapes; she's luckier than Sarah's current boyfriend, "Country Vet "star Paul Hinks, who turns up in Sarah's apartment disemboweled. The two crimes freak out the usually mellow "Driven "cast, but not so completely that they can't descend on convalescent Sam's loft en masse to party and complain about how filthy she keeps her loo. Actors Tony and Keith gorge themselves on cake; wardrobe mistress Siobhan and her stagehand boyfriend Sanjay get high; production coordinator Karen polishes off an entire box of Mr. Kipling's Fondant Fancies. Even Sarah's dodgy new boyfriend Vince (who's actually her dodgy old boyfriend from before Paul) is generous enough to bring a few bottles of bubbly. But it's Sam's old friends-her lover Hugo, the lead actor on "Driven "who first brought her into the project; Tom, her best friend from college; Devo, hunt saboteur turned corporate; and Lurch, guardian of her sculptor's tools-who do the heavy lifting when it comes to unmasking a murderer. Life imitates art imitating life in Henderson's edgy tale of manipulation and deception. (Kirkus Reviews) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

How many women, waking up handcuffed and chained to a beam in a basement (with a splitting headache), would initially pass the whole thing off as a hangover and a sexy date gone "slightly awry"? Only Sam Jones, my favorite "crime girl behaving badly". This series is not for everyone, particularly the prudish, but for those of us who enjoy mystery, suspense, witty dialogue, and just a hint of raciness, it's quite enjoyable. Often the underlying mystery is merely a backdrop to Sam's trials and tribulations, and those of her friends and acquaintances. the stories are written with humor in mind, and should be taken that way. The main problem with Sam Jones is that, every time she's around, bad things seem to happen, and people die. It's not her fault but, given her track record, the only fellow who would be likely to take her home to meet his mother would be Norman Bates!

Although I was slightly disappointed since I didn't feel it was as good as some of the others, I did enjoy it. Sam is a great character.

Lauren Henderson doesn't disappoint with this latest fantastic Sam Jones novel. Sam is you untypical heroine and she just keeps getting better.

Brill! Keep writing Lauren.
