Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) presents "CHAINED" (1934) (76 min/B&W) -- Starring: Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Otto Kruger, Stuart Erwin, Una O'Connor, Marjorie Gateson, Akim Tamiroff

Directed by Clarence Brown

Joan Crawford and Clark Gable always shell out some good entertainment. They have very good chemistry together, The third character in this love triangle is suave Otto Kruger, who has always given a good performance. Then we have Stuart Erwin, with some comic relief, who at one time had a successful television show with his wife in the early days of the media.

Watch for Mickey Rooney very young before the Andy Hardy series.

Romance and comedy is the name of the game in this flick.

The story line and plot, with good performances by the entire cast is very effective and entertaining. Which means good direction, cast and screenplay will hit the target every time.

Crawford is filmed beautifully is an actress who I can't deny has a great flair for acting, with George Folsey at the camera and Clarence Brown at the helm as director, shows her at her best.

Gable has some fast playing dialogue that makes you envious, plus he attracts women like bees to honey.

Well worth viewing for the film lovers in all of us, but a definite must for Crawford and Gable fans. Great to see more of these early releases cropping up now and then.

* Special Footnote: -- Never to see him again Joan Crawford met her biological father only once when he visited her on the set of Chained.

5.0 out of 5 stars chain reaction 11 Sep 2009
By JGC - Published on Amazon.com

I canot begin to tell you how happy I am that Joan's entire movie catalog (spanning 7 decades) is finally all starting to come out on DVD, courtesy of Warner Home Video. "Chained" has always been one of my very favirite films because Joan was so fantastic in it and it was made during a wonderful era for her (when she was the reigning queen of MGM during the '30s). It's smack dab between "Sadie McKee" and "Forsaking All Others." What a great place to be and what a great place Joan was at that time in her career. Joan and Clark Gable were together again with all that pent up sexual chemistry and energy. In this movie Joan played Diane Levering Field, a lady who falls in love with a rancher in South America. You must see it!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Superbly Beautiful Film" 14 Aug 2012
By Terry Richard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Released in 1934 at the height of Joan Crawford's MGM career when she was the highest-paid actress in the world "Chained" co-stars Joan's real-life lover Clark Gable. This movie would be the fifth film the two would star in out of eight and is one of my favorite Crawford/Gable outings.

The story deals with a socialite (Crawford) who decides to sail a ship to South America when her husband ask for a divorce. Still loving her husband she meets a smooth-talking good-looking man (played by Gable) who tries to steal her heart.

The film is extremely well-acted (probably one of the best in Crawford's career), superbly directed by Clarence Brown (a big-time MGM director) and is both involving and heart-breaking at times.

In the early 1970's Joan would say of the film, "Well, we had Clark and me together again with all the overt and implied sexuality". The movie became a huge hit and is unfortunately forgotten by many, but I would recommend anyone (especially Joan's newer fans) to check the movie out.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent film with great performances 30 Mar 2013
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Chained is a great motion picture with excellent performances by all especially Clark Gable and Joan Crawford. Their chemistry is remarkable and that enhances the entire picture! The cinematography and choreography reflect great forethought and good judgment; the plot moves along well and was enough to keep me interested especially (again) with that electric chemistry between Gable and Crawford!

When the film starts, we see that wealthy shipping tycoon Richard Field (Otto Kruger) is thrilled to be with the woman he loves, Diane Lovering (Joan Crawford). Trouble is, however, Richard is married to Louise (Marjorie Gateson) and she won't grant him a divorce! Diane is willing to go on being Richard's mistress but Richard has the heart to send Diane on one of his cruise ships bound for Argentina so she can think it all over. Richard doesn't want Diane to be unhappy if she chooses to remain with him as his mistress. Diane denies that there's anything to think over but she goes on the voyage anyway.

And that's where she meets Michael `Mike' Bradley (Clark Gable) with his magnetic personality and his energetic style. At first Diane pushes Mike away but eventually they do have a shipboard romance after all. (The others are right--look for the swimming pool scene to see how well Gable and Crawford were getting along!) When the boat reaches Argentina, Mike goes after Diane and she can't help herself at all this time--they continue their romance on Mike's ranch. Diane decides to go back to New York and tell Richard it's over between them; she also tells Mike she'll be back as soon as she can.

But that's where things get fairly complicated. Richard, much to Diane's surprise, has gotten his divorce after all from Louise! This leaves him free to marry Diane; and he confesses to Diane that he'll crack without her at his side. Diane is faced with quite a choice; she must either marry Richard for Richard's sake or crush him emotionally and leave him for Mike. Of course, the rest of the film shows how all the issues play out.

Look also for very good performances by Stuart Erwin as Mike's buddy John L. "Johnnie" Smith; Una O'Connor as Amy, Diane's maid; Akim Tamiroff as Pablo as Mike's cook on the ranch. Moreover, if you look closely, you'll see Mickey Rooney who has a small cameo as a kid in the swimming pool onboard the ship.

Chained is an excellent film for fans of the actors in it; and people who appreciate love stories with drama from the golden age of Hollywood will not be disappointed either.
