3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly basic, 21 Sep 2006
Whilst this is probably an ideal book for a beginner, anyone with even a small amount of experience in either chain or mail construction will quickly outstrip this book. Projects are generally made with inexpensive materials (copper, titanium wire, rubber O rings and so on) with a few using precious metals. The selection of tools required is basic and inexpensive, which will probably please those just starting!

Disappointingly, the rings are all unsoldered; there's remarkably little on finishing techniques and there are no tips on making the work easier (e.g. stopping the work moving around too much during assembly). The gallery section that runs to a couple of pages is quite good, however.

Reluctantly, I have to concede that the available online resources are a better bet, although they are usually devoted to armour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun for beginners, 14 Jan 2008

As a complete beginner to chain maille, I thoroughly enjoyed this book because of the simplicity of the designs and the clarity of the diagrams. I don't think it pretends to to be a book for advanced work and if that's what you are looking for you will be disappointed as all the projects use open rings and not soldered ones. But if you have always wanted to try chain maille and been a bit daunted by its complicated look then this book will teach you many of the different patterns of chain maille with large and clear computer-generated diagrams using different colours of rings. The book progresses from simple to intermediate to more advanced projects but I have found all the projects enjoyable and easy to make because of the step-by-step diagrams and have even adapted some of them to my own designs. I thoroughly recommend this book to all budding chain maille jewellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fab book - a true must have, 8 Jan 2009
By R. Banbury "brinbunny" (UK) - See all my reviews

I bought this book as a true beginner and was worried that the projects would be too advanced. HOW WRONG WAS I! This book is both informative and great for beginners - I have now made over half of the projects with plans to make more. I find it rare to buy a book like this and make so many of the projects as I make beaded jewellery and only ever do 1 or 2 things out of a book. Now I have also been to a class and I am a bit more advanced the projects are still useful and I can start to adapt them into other ideas using the basic shapes. Another plus of the book is that you don't have to buy the exact rings they specify as they just give the size. The pictures are easy to follow and I like the way you get 2 pictures of each project 1 of them being worn and another picture of the finished item so I can see how it should look.
