Biography

Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit ... Read more in Amazon's Red Baraat Store

Product Description

Review

From Brooklyn, New York, comes one of the most entertaining and original Asian fusion sets of the summer. Led by percussionist Sunny Jain, an exponent of the double-sided dhol drum from northern India, Red Baraat specialise in reviving and updating the music played at Indian wedding processions, along with bhangra and a hefty dash of funk and jazz. The lineup is intriguing, with three percussionists matched against six brass players. The trombone or sousaphone often provides the bass lines and riffs, while duelling trumpets and saxophone add the often complex melody lines and improvised solos. The music varies from celebratory, high-energy pieces such as Chaal Baby or Punjabi Wedding Song through to the slow, almost hymnal Samaro Mantra, in which brooding brass instrumentation is matched against insistent percussion. --The Guardian

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing 24 Nov 2012

The CD arrived safely, on time and well packaged. Thanks.

I heard the band by accident on the radio, they were to perform live in Bristol so I booked tickets. Wow Red Baraat were amazing, a whole evening of great fun, we were exhausted after the concert, then I bought the CD too. If you like manic indie then you really need to buy the CD and if possible go see them live.

4.0 out of 5 stars a real review 12 Jan 2013

Salutations,

I don't usually review music on here, but couldn't help but notice how negative and completely wasted the other reviews are on here.

I saw the Red Baraat live a few years back and couldn't help but go home with this CD!

In short it is funky, fresh, and exciting. Now, I've yet to be able to hook my pop-pumping Justin Bieber fan friends (yes, I know, although I would love to disown them for being Beiberbabies I still admire them for their, well mostly for their cooking and willingness to drive me places. In fact when I get a car . . . )that this is the album for them, but it stands alone in its own genre.

Get it: if you appreciate Indian fusion music. Skip it: if your simplistic mind can only comprehend completely repetitive beats in 4/4 time and simplistic lyrics that lack substance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flavor of the minute 12 July 2012

Pretty weak. Nothing new to hear, so they added some horns and are classifying it as funk, meh. I would be curious to see if they chart or make it beyond a year or so as it would only appeal to the world music/NPR crowd. Unique but not great.
