This book may not be comfortable reading at times, but it potrays the harsh regime that existed in Mental Institutions in the 50's and 60's. Derek McCarthy was obviously determined to make a positive difference to the care of the mentally ill and be the compassionate voice of people who couldn't speak for themselves.

Well done Derek.

This is a well constructed and detailed account of the treatment of the mentally ill in the 50's and 60's giving a brilliant insight to how some in the caring proffession thought these poor unfortunate human beings should be treated and the difficulties for those in the proffession who sort to change attitudes and survive in the proffession a must be read book for anyone with compassion for those less fortunate.

The fifties and sixties were the big chance period for psychiatry. In came chlorpromazine and the mental health act, out went the prevalence of abuse, slowly! The staff working through this period were the bedrock of modern psychiatry, moving from abuse to modernity, and seeing each for what it was. To read the follow up go to my book which covers the sixties and seventies. The experience of seeing how the chance occurred and the impact of patients and staff. Stuart Townsend.
