Ceremony--essentially a collection of remixes and outtakes from the sessions that spawned the recent albums Supernatural and Shaman--may well appear to be little more than a stop-gap offering aimed at seasoned completists or those insatiable newcomers who've been seduced by Santana's latterday commercial Latin-pop renaissance. However, one must be prepared to be surprised. Aside from five previously unreleased cuts (the best being Santana's very own creamy instrumental "Curacion" and the Afro-energetic "Truth Don Die", written by Femi Anikulapo Kuti, son of Fela) two or three of the revamped items surpass the original album versions. Witness, for example, Wyclef's crisp, bright, stabbing remix of "Maria Maria"--much better than the muddier stodge purveyed on Supernatural. Chris Staropoli's percussive club remix of "Smooth" is also superior, although Rob Thomas's (Matchbox Twenty) aftershave-reeking sweet nothings are still enough to send any self-respecting damsel scurrying off to the ladies' room. Thumbs down, too to the inauspicious alternate vocal take of "Why Don't You and I" (featuring the Calling's Alex Band rather than Nickelback's Chad Kroeger). At times such as these you wish Santana would stop faffing about with Billboard flavours of the month and cut some capers with Ry Cooder's mates in Havana. Or even Gloria Estefan. Kevin Maidment

The music business is unpredictable. Some artists are lucky to even get one shot, others enjoy long careers and slowly transition out of public consciousness, and a chosen few manage to have a renaissance which makes them arguably even more successful than they ever were. This is the case with acts like Aerosmith, Cher, and Santana, which is one of my favorite acts of all time.
While some old school fans of Santana had mixed feelings about the music and revolving-door policy of guest star singers that made "Supernatural," one of 1999's best selling albums, I for one am enjoying Carlos' latter-day work in a totally different way than I enjoyed the amazing hits that initially brought him into the public's consciousness. "Smooth" is one of those songs that to me will hold up as well as my all time favorites from the man who no matter is fronting one of his songs, never leaves any doubt of who is playing that amazing guitar.
I am surprised that I did not hear much about this CD when it was released in late 2003, but in a nutshell it grabs some songs that never made it to the final versions of "Supernatural" or "Shaman" as well as some remixes of some of the best songs that did make it. In both cases, I am really glad that I bought this CD as I was not a huge fan of "Shaman" as it took the revolving-door policy of guest stars a little too far and lost the cohesiveness of "Supernatural," but here we get a great and surprising correction by having the lead singer of The Calling replace Nickleback's Chad Kroeger in "Why Don't You and I" which totally makes the song. The former lacked passion and this one is so catchy and alive.

A modern feel prevails in this album with its' and pop and occasionally hip hop sensibilities mixed with traditional Santana latin fare. When I bought this album I was more interested in the 'Rarities' than the 'Remixes', and having owned it for 3 years that is the way it stayed. Cynics would argue that the rarities were songs that it was felt were not good enough to make it onto Supernatural, Shaman or All That I Am. Maybe with a couple of them this was true. But the instrumental 'Curacion' is so beautiful and mellow with a crisp, fat guitar tone, for me it rivals most of the mexican maestros' other lyric-less numbers. And the song on track 10, 'Come To My World' bristles with pace and rhythm, and although you can dance to it there is still some scorching fret work that will prick the ears of rock/guitar fans. If you appreciate the older (Abraxas, Moonflower) Santana then look elsewhere, but otherwise this is a good CD to add to your collection even if you only learn to love 2 or 3 songs, (like me).

I bought this second-hand on Amazon Marketplace on spec for three quid thinking if it wasn't up to much then I hadn't wasted much.
However, it's really good apart from the track with the out-of-key kids singing at the end of the track.
The remix of Foo-Foo is excellent as are most of the other tracks, most of which are different from their first releases on Supernatural and Shaman. I could listen to Primavera all day.
I'd have quite happily paid full price for this. As it is I'm well chuffed with what I actually paid second hand.
Let's hope All That I Am is as good as the first two in the trilogy.

I ordered this with fairly low expectations. As I am an avid Santana fan and have followed them for around 40 years, been to many of their concerts and have most of their albums, I thought at the low price offered it might be OK for a few spins. The description had put me off describing it as a collection of remixes and rarities. In my experence every time I've bought remix/rarity records they have turned out to be much inferior to the originals. Not here though. Every remix here sounds better than the original and all the rarities are well worth their inclusion. Smooth, which I never thought could be topped, is given an irresistable dance hook while maintaining the original sound and rhythem. A great buy.

My first Santana album. I bought it because many of their tracks are used in dance classes which I enjoy (particularly Smooth & Maria Maria). I wasn't sure which album to go for so picked this one. Initially I was a bit disappointed as the remixing meant they did not sound the way I expected.
However, I have listened to the album over and over and now I just LOVE it. It gets played every day in the car on the way to work. I particularly love Curacion, a great piece to unwind to on the way home.
I want to buy more Santana but not sure again which album to go for next.
