Product Description

Review

...much the best performance of (Britten's Ceremony of Carols) is given by the choristers of Canterbury Cathedral under their director David Flood. The recital is called, appropriately, 'Ceremony' ... at the centre of its programme is the voice of the boy chorister, the treble, and that is something that deserves a celebration in itself. The species as a whole is splendidly represented, but there are also ample opportunities for the impressive rank of soloists the Cathedral appears able to draw on. Mendelssohn's Hear my Prayer and I waited for the Lord are followed by Stanford's Magnificat in G with its soloist propelled magnificently aloft on arrival, which generations of aspirants have regarded as particularly nice work if you can get it. Usually it is the undisputed territory of the head boy (who is here the outstanding Joel Whitewood), but now it goes to another admirable singer, George Inscoe. Altogether they have seven treble soloists on parade in this recital and all in music that is well worth hearing. --Gramophone

This (recording of the Britten Ceremony of Carols) has perhaps the loveliest choral sound of the many I have reviewed for this Journal, English treble sound at its most characteristic... Among the seven fine treble soloists, Joel Whitewood (2007 BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year) is effective throughout, especially as the nuanced first soprano in I waited; George Inscoe joins him in this work and then gives an unusually flexible performance of the Stanford Magnificat in G. The paired Nunc dimittis features the elegant bass Andrew Gower... The program concludes with Samuel Barber's own arrangement Agnus Dei from his Adagio for Strings in a rich and polished performance that, in this recording, takes advantage of the superb acoustic of the Canterbury nave... The recorded sound is excellent. --Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians (USA)

Wonderful cd! 24 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is really a wonderful cd with excellent renderings of "A Ceremony of Carols", "Hear my Prayer", "I waited for the Lord" and Stanford in G("Magnificat" et "Nunc Dimittis")
The "fill-ups" are great too.It features the trebles Joel Whitewood (2007 BBC topchorister of the year) and George Inscoe, who are both very good as well as some other good choristers.
Really a wonderful cd! Also good:

On Sunday 11th September we went to the special service at the Cathedral for the tenth anniversary of 9/11. The Choir's performance of the anthem Agnus Dei by Samuel Barber was wonderful and the next day we looked on Amazon to find a Cd of the Choir and sure enough we found "Ceremony" which includes the anthem. The Cd is brilliant and worth buying just for the anthem and the Choir's rendition of "Hear My Prayer".
