"A beautifully illustrated reference book for potters and anyone with an interest in the anthropology and sociology of South-East Asia." The Collector (Dec 2005) 'This is not only a beautifully illustrated and useful reference source for potters but, a documentation of traditional craftsmanship and a way of life that looks set to disappear.' Craftsman Magazine (July 2005)

Product Description

In this book, Mick Shippen provides a comprehensive survey of the ceramic craftsmen of Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. He describes the life and work and history of these individuals and their communities, as well as including information about making and firing techniques and the aesthetics and function of the ceramics they produce. This will not only be a beautifully illustrated and useful reference source for potters but, as a documentation of traditional craftsmanship and a way of life that looks set to disappear, it will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in the anthropology and sociology of South East Asia. 5.0 out of 5 stars Living story of a living craft, well told, 1 Aug 2005
By
David Knapp (Ko Sichang, Thailand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ceramics of South East Asia (Hardcover)
This handsome, profusely illustrated volume elevates the seductively simple village pottery of Southeast Asia from an appealing craft into a thoroughly fascinating window on ancient folkways.

Graceful jars, pots and stoves take on a life too seldom found in Asian art books. As Mick Shippen surveys he pottery, he introduces us to aging potters and the strands of tradition and myth which bind their work to a village way of life that took its shape before roads and money linked the farmers of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam with a larger world.

Here you will meet the old potter who spits over her impromptu kiln of bamboo and straw to keep her wares from breaking when she fires them. You'll see how the clay is dug--and learn how hard it is to convince the modernizing cadres of the Lao Peoples' Democratic Republic that a good clay deposit deserves to be protected from 'development'. You will feel the claustrophobia of burrowing a tunnel kiln four meters below the village fields, and the searing heat that blasts the potter looking down to see if firing is complete. Again and again you will feel you have met these distant villagers, and known the drifting evening scent of woodsmoke, and smelled the fragrant rice cooking in an earthen pot.

The extensive and richly detailed context Shippen provides does not lead him to underplay the pottery itself. He gives gratifying detail of process and product, and the differences between seemingly similar wares, all engagingly photographed. This superb book is capable of changing your travel plans and making you a collector. It is certain to give you a feeling of intimacy with Southeast Asia that most of the volumes on broader aspects of the region cannot approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Tribute, 25 Nov 2005
This review is from: Ceramics of South East Asia (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the Ceramic Art and culture of South East Asia. This is a fitting tribute to the creative output of this region written in an impressively accessible and informative style. Its a good read, a great resource for ceramics practitioners and collectors, and if you have travelled in these countries you will want to return again and see what you overlooked last time! The images are great too. I'm impressed by the way the writer has managed to comment upon the social circumstances and inform the reader without being too polemical. It is how Radio BBC4 would write a book for 'From our Correspondent' on the subject of Ceramics in south east asia! You'll want to dip into this book more than once.
Marvelous!

I absolutely loved this book. It is a delight whether you have a deep interest in pottery or if you just enjoy other cultures especially those that are disappearing. The photos are magnificent and give a real insight. Brilliant book!
