Product Description

Product Description

From the Edwardian golden age of steam to the present, no mode of travel has captured the hearts of the British people like the railways. In wartime and peace, along major routes and minor, steam, diesel and electric trains have moved goods, taken commuters to work or families on holidays - a constant presence in an always-changing way of life. A Century of Railway Travel tells the story of one hundred years of Britain's railway heritage using striking full-page imagery with commentary from bestselling author Paul Atterbury. He explains the controversial history and unique appeal of the railways, and his expert eye steers the reader from the heyday of steam to the tragedy that was Beeching and rail's recent revival. The book stops to consider the great steam engines, the drivers, luggage, passengers, postcards, tickets, station scenes and carriage interiors we all remember so fondly.

About the Author

Paul Atterbury is the author of numerous books on railway topics including Branch Line Britain and Along Lost Lines and has appeared regularly as an expert on the BBCs Antiques Roadshow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy picture book 7 Oct. 2014
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is not a book to buy if you are looking for information. It is basically a picture book, although there is a decent write-up about each picture, mentioning the context. The left side of each page contains the narrative while the right side contains the picture.

The book is not a pocket book, but is a handy size that will easily slip into a brief case, leaving plenty of room for other stuff, for carrying around. I can only assume that the reviewers who are disappointed with the book were expecting a different type of book, perhaps like the author's earlier full-sized books.

I enjoy this book for what it is - a handy picture book with extra info.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 3 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was expecting more than a quick overview and some staid photos. Good writing style. This ebook should really be in the 'rail travel in an hour' genre, and priced accordingly. It might be better value in its book form for rail buffs who want a physical copy of the photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still an excellent read. 12 Jan. 2015

Classic Paul Atterbury - I did not know he wrote for Shire Books - hence the 'pocket size'. Still an excellent read.

OK but the text doesn't flow particularly freely.
