Now in its second edition, this book succeeds at several levels. Historical background and basic explanation is carefully covered with the assistance of graphics, drawings and a helpful glossary of terms. Well-captioned photographs illustrate important aspects of signalling development throughout the period. There is detailed coverage of contemporary developments in the science and practice of signalling, as well as helpful reference to remaining areas of traditional signalling and to the preserved railway sector. The style is lucid and racy, and the quality of production and illustration quite superb. Highly recommended.

Very informative book for those interested in railways and their operation. Written in a way that is easily understood although of a technical nature. Goes back to the very start of the railways and covers right up to the signalling systems of today. Recommended

This book explained the key developments in UK signalling practices over the past 200 years in a clear and easy to understand way. Good use of photographs together with diagrams where appropriate was used to get the point across to good effect. I thought it tackled what may appear at first sight to be a complicated subject with an ease and clarity that is missing in many books. A must buy for anyone with an interest in the subject.
