Andrew Prine, who also starred in another obscure gem, simon king of the witches (also released by dark sky) stars as polite but demented psychopath Clement dunne hell-bent on murduring his way from miss january to december in this obscure horror gem directed by John Peyser. The film takes the novel approach of seperating the film into three stories each featuring one of the killers targets, also allowing the audience time to identify with the character before Mr Dunne kills them making the picture more suspensful.
The first victim is Jamie lyn baur from American soap opera days of our lives, who plays a nurse who heads into the countryside to meet her boyfriend she is soon attacked by a bunch of psycho hippies (remember this is post manson family, the lead hippie even refers to the group as the family) and then almost raped by the motel owner who saves her life before meeting the killer. The second story stars Ray danton and francine york as part of a group heading to a remote island to shoot nude centrefold shots. In order to get to his intended target Dunne kills the group off one by one. Finally in the third story former playmate tiffany bolling who also starred in the minor classic The candy snatchers is an air hostess who flees town to escape the demented killer only to find there is nowhere to run!
This, like simon king of the witches, is one of those mid seventies classics I honestly never heard of until dark sky issued it, but apperently was successful on the grind-house circuits and it's not difficult to see why. There is a high bodycount and copious nudity throughout the picture, which is always a seller and as it turns out the film itself is actually pretty darned good! Sure these days it may look tame compared to later gore-fests like friday the 13th but the movie is loads of fun particularly if you like these kind's of film. Prine is as ever an excellent and highly underrated actor who is supurb as the psycopath, and clearly from the making of featurette loves the films and relishes his role.
Dark sky again give us a great disc, the print has damage in places but overall is pretty good considering how obscure and low budget the movie is, and is in the correct widescreen ratio. While not overloade with extras there is the usual trailers and t.v. spots and as I mentioned before the interesting making of featurette. Overall then highly reccomennded to genre fans.
