Directed by Nicholas Hynter, whose theatrical background provided a magnificent debut with The Madness of King George [1994], Center Stage is a drama set in the hugely competitive and pressured world of a New York Ballet company. By no means breaking any new ground, Hynter's movie dusts down the all-too-familiar staples of the likes of Fame and A Chorus Line and gives them a glamorous, energetic update. Fans of those classic "Backstage" movies can expect, and duly receive, all the usual clichés: the domineering stage mother; the dancer who risks health for success; the arrogant male lead dancer; the struggling newcomer; the imperious teacher; even the last-minute injury. Yet, like a guilty pleasure, it's hard not to enjoy Hynter's realistic and reverential glimpse of this ruthless, demanding world, never succumbing to overt soapy theatrics and filled with impressive dance sequences. While not as exuberant as Fame, it's still a fun, if depthless, look at the world of Ballet.

On The DVD: Hynter's commentary, while not brimming with technical detail or thrilling anecdote, allows him to expound on this particularly demanding profession, as well as his personal recollections of theatrical life. While the two deleted scenes are forgettable, Dance fans will enjoy the five extended performance sequences, while a making-of featurette and Mandy Moore video round off a slight package. --Danny Graydon

I bought this film a few weeks ago and I've found it a pleasure to watch! The film manages to give a balance between dance and real life problems, and shows an insight into the life of a dancer at the American Ballet Academy.

Okay, the acting is not A* standard and perhaps the script is a little predictable (to say the least), but the dancing certainly makes up for this. The film provides the audience with an eclectic mix of modern and classical ballet, as well as some urban and latin dance influences too.

The ballet itself is beautifully performed, introducing some new talent, especially Amanda Schull who plays Jodie Sawyer. Each dancer has a different style and technique which gives the film such interesting dance sequences. My only criticism is that I felt that the dance students didn't show the level of commitment a real dance student would have, which somehow detaches the audience from being as emotionally involved as perhaps the director would have wanted us to be (due to the script), so this is why I haven't given the film the full 5 stars it would have otherwise recieved.

I found the soundtrack a pleasant surprise with music from Tchaikovsky to Jamiroquai (yes strange concoction) but this mixture of musical genres works very well.

I found the choreography refreshing and varied, and both the dancers and the different styles of dance make this film such a success and such an inspiration. The final dance sequence is the film's climax with bright costumes, great music, and of course, amazing dancing!

If you love to dance, this film is definately for you and if you don't, you might be surprised how much you enjoy it!

The film is all about a ballet school who are looking for 6 dancers to take on, but the problem being there is a large number eligable. The dancers have problems with "pushy" mums, boyfriends and eating disorders.
With a young cast who do very well. If your interested in Dirty Dancing or Save the last dance then this is a film for you with a realy good sound track with songs from Michael Jackson and Jamiroquai.

Being a sucker for film that have anything to do with dancing I got the DVD. It is one of those films that are meant to be for the under 20's. The performance of the actors was the least to say wooden not surprising as all the leading roles were given to professional dancers not actors (The role of Cooper Nielsen was given to the principal dancer of American Ballet Theatre,Ethan Stiefel and Amanda Schull is in San Francisco Ballet). The storyline was pure cheese and the characters one dimentional (the pushy mom, the determined heroine, the love-'em-and-leave-'em star dancer cum choreographer,the talented moody student).But the fantastic dance routines which they take a big part of the film are trully sensational. I will keep the DVD and watch it again and again but definitely I would fast forward the dialogue. Having seen Mr Ethan Stiefel on stage I would recommend to stick to what he does best, ballet dancing because when it come to a good pirouette he is Da Man.
