Format: Paperback
Serial novels aimed not only at intelligent pre-teens/teenagers but also at their parents, have been the literary stars of the last decade. This excellent first novel in the Celts v Romans series has a refreshingly different backdrop - a Briton community anxiously anticipating invasion by the Romans. The author manages to inform readers about a culture and a period in history of which most will know very little, whilst engaging them in an exciting tale peopled by a variety of well-drawn (mostly young) heroes, heroines and despicable traitors. The historical aspects of the book are delivered with considerable authority, creating a believable picture of a mystical yet brutal time as we follow Diarmid and his friends on the difficult and dangerous path to Briton adulthood. This book was enjoyed by all the members of our family. The final few chapters left us, like all good series, waiting eagerly for the next episode.

Refreshing to find a book which educates AND entertains at the same time. Kids loved it, and I enjoyed it immensely too ! Looking foward to the next in the series (well, it DOES say Book One.....).
