essential reading,
By Andy Boyle (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Celtic Design and Ornament for Calligraphers (Paperback)
I've had this book for a few years now, and I have to say that of the many books I have about Celtic Art, this is one of the most used. It shows how to construct a manuscript page from the ground up in a way that is pleasing to the eye, and then how to decorate it. In the first half of the book there are plenty of exemplars to follow, and once you get your head around the techniques used, there is enough materiel to allow you to have a go at designing your own page. The second part of the book is a basic guide to various types of celtic decoration, including knotwork, spirals, key and step patterns, and a little bit about zoomorphics. There is certainly enough here to get you from being a complete starter to producing a finished (if simple)Kells type of manuscript.
The only real downside of the second section is the authors use of Andy Sloss' knotwork method, rather than a more traditional one such as Bain's or Meehan's, but that's down to personal preferance I suppose. The author recomends the use of a little tool called The Ames Lettering Guide. I managed to get one, but had to get it sent over from America. In these days of CAD etc, draughting tools are getting harder to find. You won't find anything else this detailed or useful, so long as you are prepared to do a little work and are not afraid of calculators.

Author's reply to the reader from Chandler,
By Jack Mackinder - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Celtic Design and Ornament for Calligraphers (Paperback)
Your reviewer from Chandler has missed it entirely.Anyone considering buying my book should be aware that it is all about creating your own designs in the style of the 8th century Insular manuscripts, not about copying someone else's examples. "basically shows the basic border layouts" "doesn't really give any examples of knotwork, etc." "If you can use a ruler and circles template you don't need this book." Not what I expected,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Celtic Design and Ornament for Calligraphers (Paperback)
This book basically shows the basic border layouts to use for Celtic designs but doesn't really give any examples of knotwork, etc. used to fill in the borders. For example, the design on the front jacket of the book is not indicative of what's inside. The basic template of the jacket decoration (ie - the shape of the border) is shown, but not the detail work of the knotwork, etc. If you can use a ruler and circles template, you don't need this book.
