Product Description

Product Description

Centuries ago, ardent young Welshmen began the tradition of creating beautiful wooden spoons, carved with appropriate romantic symbols, to give to the girl of their dreams. Lovespoons are still presented as tokens of affection and good luck today, and in this book two leading practitioners explain the background of their craft, reveal the techniques involved in creating these highly prized objects and show absolute beginners how to design and fashion lovespoons of their own. Features include: A comprehensive illustrated guide to lovespoon Celtic symbols. A checklist of all tools and equipment you will need. Step-by-step instructions on spoon carving, including the complexities of chains, spirals and balls in cages. A portfolio of 30 lovespoon patterns, with notes on their inspiration, the types of wood chosen and the craftsmanship involved. A practical guide to lovespoon design, incorporating traditional symbols. Tips and useful aids, including sharpening and finishing techniques. A gallery of lovespoons carved by the authors.

First Sentence
The origins of lovespoon carving are uncertain, mainly due to the difficulty of dating spoons, but it is an ancient craft and very old examples are found in Wales, as well as in Scandinavia, Brittany in France, and other European countries, all of which claim that the tradition originated with them. Read the first page

Great!!! 2 Mar 2006

This book has a lot of nice patterns and designs. It gives examples of a variety of woods and finishes. I would have liked more celtic knots, but I can't be disappointed with the number of patterns, detailed photographs, and tips.

I wanted to expand my collection of spoon patterns and this has several ranging from simple to complex. Also includes some tips.
Interesting and inspiring book! 29 Sep 2010

The authors explained the origin and basic ideas about love spoons, and then showed tools and techniques for making some of the basic designs. Since the tools listed are in metric measurements, for someone who knows nothing about carving tools, it can be confusing at first. You will find out you don't need exactly the same tools or as many tools to make those spoons. There are quite a few designs from easy to more advanced for readers to try. I have made some with the designed slightly modified. The result has been good. This is not a pattern book, but rather an introduction to the art and basic techniques. You will find that what looked fancy to you at first are actually achievable. Suitable for beginners.
