I had this when it was first published back in the 1980s and loved it then. This is a wonderfully accessible book written by the master of Celtic Art studies, George Bain. Every artist needs this book on their shelf. Do not go for the more broadly commercial titles and cheap publications that publish for profit. George Bain spent years studying in this discipline and should not be ignored. Proper attention must be paid to this book for anyone professing to have an interest in this ancient art form. This is the original book on the construction of Celtic forms such as key work, spirals, illuminated manuscripts, engraved Scottish stonework and he shows you in the most perfect way on how to consider drawing the complex designs. George Bain is the priority number one author that must be consulted first.

The book is an artistic tour-de-force. It is an explanation (artistic, technical)by an accomplished artist of an outstanding art form.

Celti Knotwork Explained? 31 Dec. 2003
By Peter Chellew - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Acknowledging the complexities of this book's approach to Celtic Knotwork, Iain Bain, George Bain's son, has published a much more approachable introduction in his Celtic Knotwork, Constable, London 1986. It was reprinted last in 1992 but is unfortunately out of print. Used copies are available and I would stongly recommend Iain Bain's book as a most helpful place to begin. The senior Bain's book is however an informative reference, a far cry above the usual "picture book for colouring" approach.
