This is a disc simply made for late night listening. The mood is unfailingly gentle and lyrical, Julian Lloyd-Webber's tone unfailingly rounded and smooth, the orchestral accompaniments unfailingly lush. The one new repertoire addition is the cellist's own piece, Jackie's Song, written in tribute to his friend and colleague, the late Jacqueline du Pré in response to what he saw as the misrepresentation of her in the film, Hilary and Jackie. Among the finest performances here are arrangements of Franck's Panis angelicus and the charming Cantilena by Rheinberger. The only warnings to utter are that the Chopin Nocturne requires a very sweet tooth, and that because the mood is so uniform, it's best not to listen to the whole disc in one go. The sound envelops you like a warm eiderdown. Forego the hot chocolate and unwind to this instead. --Harriet Smith

This is a fantastic CD with some great tunes well played by Julian - I play it frequently as it is so tranquill and relaxing. Was not sure about Cello music but was won over instantly. Well worth buying.
