Product Description

Product Description

Become an instant astronomer, even if you've never used a telescope before, with the one-of-a-kind StarSense AutoAlign. Just set up the accessory, push the Align button on the hand control, and StarSense begins capturing and comparing images of the night sky against its internal database. In about three minutes, it's gathered enough information to triangulate its position and align itself. Then, press the Sky Tour button: StarSense will automatically slew to all the best stars, planets, galaxies, and more currently visible in the night sky.

How it Works

The self-alignment technology behind our award-winning SkyProdigy series is now available for all of Celestron's current computerized telescopes and backwards compatible with many older models as well

A small digital camera takes the place of your finderscope and attaches using one of two provided mounting brackets. The included StarSense hand control, with a database of over 40,000 celestial objects, takes the place of your NexStar hand control. The camera automatically captures a series of images of the sky. StarSense identifies the stars in the images, matching them to its database. Once a positive match is confirmed, StarSense calculates the coordinates of the center of the captured image, thereby determining exactly where the telescope is pointed.

Before StarSense, using a computerized telescope required a lengthy alignment process of finding and centering at least two bright stars in the telescope's eyepiece. But StarSense automatically aligns itself with minimal user input. Just enter your time, date, and location and let StarSense do the rest!

Advanced Mount Modeling

Even the most advanced telescope users will love using StarSense AutoAlign. This affordable accessory replaces the expensive software usually used for advanced mount modeling.

With built-in mount modeling, you'll get superior pointing accuracy from horizon to horizon. When your alignment needs to be perfect, add up to 10 additional calibration stars to achieve a new level of accuracy, great for locating objects in the camera's field of view for astroimaging.

It works pretty well with my 8se but apparently there have been/are problems when using equitorial mounts but simpler alt/az mounts like mine are ok.
Heard a rumour that your location on our planet seems also to affect accuracy.
Stars and nebula are smack bang centre through the eyepiece, with planets which move through the sky at different rates it seems to have bit more trouble with. With a medium to high mag. eyepiece it can miss them completely and find it best to initially find the chosen planet with my 32 mm eyepiece + focal reducer. There have been various firmware updates however but haven't got round to finding out whether mine is up to date, but I will.
One one occasion the dreaded clouds started rolling in as soon as I began setting up but it still succeeded in doing an alignment although it took a little longer of course, the clouds worsened and decided to pack up for the night but before I did I tried it again but this time it failed which was understandable.

To summarise ( in my humble opinion).

Is it expensive for what it does?
Yes it probably is.
Does it save much time?
I got used to doing a 3 star align so no not really.
Is it intriguing and fun to use?
YES!... :-)

.......Jan 2015 update.....
Updated firmware, ( a couple of months ago actually) and now it finds planets just fine, the bugs are I presume pretty much sorted now for all types of compatible mount.

First time out, seems to works well, no more fiddling about for ages finding/centering alignment stars.
Magic to watch it do it all itself, much faster than you can!
(Everything (location, time, mount mechanics) has to be set correctly of course.)
Its a bit pricey, but there is a lot to it, and the quality is good.
Note: there is no new version of nexremote (to do the pc mimic of the new handcontrol), which is a shame - i found that really useful with the original nexstar handset. However, to make set up easier without nexremote, Ive found I can set the location and time data from a laptop via the starsense handset serial port, communicating with the same command protocol as the old nexstar handset. Once aligned, Goto's etc should therefore work with stellarium etc, communicating through the serial port, but i havent tried that yet.

Does all it says it does. But what Celestron omitted to say was that it is not compatible with PC or Mac control. If I had known that at the beginning I may not have purchased it.

Brilliant gadget. Enabled me to get an excellent align for the first time, and thus enabled me to see things like Andromeda and the Ring Nebula that I stood no chance of finding previously.
Easy to use, and certainly does exactly what it claims.

Fantastic. I was sceptical before purchasing as i live just outside a big city so wasn't sure how it would core with fairly bad light pollution but it consistently works flawlessly. Takes the tedium out of aligning your goto scope.

I like this. With a Celestron Advanced VX mount and EdgeHD tube, even in the horrid light pollution in Harlow, Essex where I can't even find Polaris, it works perfectly. Aligns the scope in a few minutes with very little effort.

This accessory works very well now and I am able to auto align and GOTO stars and planets with ease.

At the time of writing this review, it does not yet work with all Celestron GOTO mounts such as the GT but they are working on it.
Be prepared to spend time updating the camera and handset to the latest firmware online. The manual that comes with the unit does not explain how to do this. You will need to join 'Team Celestron' to download the latest update(s) and connect the handset and camera to the PC and the mount to install.

Alignment is very accurate. Overall very pleased so far with this purchase, it saves a lot of time and effort aligning my C8 AVX telescope.

***** Update **** Planet pointing has now been fixed, planets and earths moon now appear near or even right in the centre of the eyepiece every time. Polar Alignment has also been fixed. You will need to download, install and update your mount and StarSense camera to the latest version from the Team Celestron website.

Recommended.
