I liked the quality of this little USB microscope. I also like the fact that is was instantly recognised by my Ubuntu Linux laptop computer and could immediately take snapshots. Even the snapshot button on the microscope worked on my Linux machine. (This microscope seems to be built around one of the widely available webcam chipsets...)

The only downside I could find was that the colors seem washed out. This could very likely be a matter of some settings in my computer, so it is probably not a fair complaint. Being an electronics professional, this does not detract from its usefulness for inspecting surface-mount components, solder joints, etc.

All in all, an excellent gadget for kids, coin collectors, insect collectors, electronic hobbyists, etc. Two thumbs up!

A whole new world! 1 Jun 2011
By Mill
I bought this camera to use in a lesson on plankton. I was a bit concerned, when I bought it, that the reflection of the LED lights on the water would make it difficult to use, but with some careful angling it didn't cause too much of a problem. The images and videos I got were really clear and the children had a great time. If you were buying this mainly for looking at things through water then an underlit microscope set up would probably be more appropriate.

Since the lesson I have been looking at loads of other stuff - mainly insects, I really love this bit of kit, it is so handy and robust. I would certainly recommend it especially for schools or families. As for the Windows 7 comment - I set mine up to run in compatibility mode (really, really simple)and have had no problems.

This device is well made and performs well. The software is basic but has all the features normally required. Focus and depth of field are quite good. The mount is high quality and easy to adjust.

The only drawback is the LEDs are very bright, which is perfect for viewing items with matte finish but creates reflections when viewing reflective specimens such as coins and watch movements. However, the construction lends it self to easy modification using a simple filter or even installing a small rheostat.

I have two other brands (more expensive) and this is by far the best for all round inspection.

Easy handling, to correct the bright light on screen its better to cut off other lights sources,so it works better in a dark environment. Read more

Very good!
A little fiddly, the software needs to run in compatibility mode on Windows 7 (quite easy to do), but produces excellent pictures and video.
