The telescope is solidly-constructed, perhaps a taller tripod might have been nice as there's a fair bit of crouching on the floor involved to see objects overheard or at least high in the sky.
It took me a while to get to try it properly as we seem to get one night per week that's clear at the moment. It also took a while to work out the best method to calibrate it, the telescope arrives believing you're in the US but having finally entered the longitude and latitude and made a note of some of the best stars to use to set it up, I was finally able to let it work.
The tripod does move slightly as you're focusing, perhaps because our decking isn't rock-solid, and I've still not got up at 2am to get a decent look at Saturn. But my first view of the moon and of Jupiter was enough to make me realise: this is a way, way better telescope than I had as a kid and very good value for money. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is its inability to remember the time, date etc. You have to keep reminding it of this stuff each time you turn on. Plus, the orange backlit handset isn't very easy to read - you still need a torch to read it properly. But these are the minor niggles of an older gentleman and wouldn't put me off buying the very same 'scope again.

This is a GOTO scope - that is the part that is computerised. It helps you align, find and view more objects than the telescope can resolve. If you want to see more, buy a bigger scope but this will cost you a lot more. The finder is difficult to use if you wear varifocal glasses - I added a red laser finder with a couple of jubilee clips at a cost of about a tenner from awell known web based auction site..

I think that a product that is described as a "COMPUTERISED" telescope should be capable of being controlled by a computer. As it comes in the box, ... it is NOT computerised. To make the connection to a computer requires that you buy connecting cables that are NOT in the box. So, I returned this item ... and then only received £3.99 allowance for the return postage although it cost £10 to send back to Amazon. I am entirely unable to recommend this product - it does NOT do what it says on the box!!

    Excellent Service 14 Sept. 2011

I purchased this item from Amazon, and while the telescope itself worked fine, the remote and motor did not work. Since I purchased it for the computerized motor, I was disappointed. I contacted Celestron and they accurately diagnosed it using the error codes on the remote. Their prompt, courteous and accurate response along with the efforts of Amazon to handle the exchange made it an excellent transaction in spite of initial disappointment. If you plan to use it for extended viewing, purchase the ac adapter, 8 AA batteries last 45 minutes. Don't forget the computer cables (2) to make it functional with the software.

This isn't necessarily a BAD telescope but there are things you should be aware of: first, if you want to view anything that is overhead you will be crawling in the dirt to see it. It is a much better idea to go with a different design in this regard. 2) Don't be fooled by the software this ships with, there is NO connection between this telescope (as is) and external hardware. I would highly recommend spending the very few extra bucks it takes for a better design.

HIGHLY recommend this Celestron Telescope! 24 April 2013

We ordered the Celestron Telescope and received it within 4 days. It came with a CD that contains all of the information on how to set it up, as well as a very cool astronomy software CD called “The Journey Starts Here” which is VERY useful for the average consumer that is interested in astronomy but doesn’t know where to begin to learn about it. The telescope was packaged very securely and compact for safe shipping.

The Quick Setup Guide is straight forward and easy to follow. Having never used a telescope before, much less put one together, we were able to set the whole thing up with no problems following the guide in less than an hour. The Finderscope was easy to align and using the computerized SkyAlign function we were able align the telescope itself using three bright stars within minutes. One of the most amazing things we LOVE about this product is that you can select an object from the internal database and the computer on the telescope will automatically find it for you! Even better, the hand control only displays objects that are currently only visible in the sky given your location. We decided to view Saturn and to our amazement the telescope positioned itself so that it was pointing directly at Saturn. For the record, we had no idea where Saturn was located in the sky, but when I looked through the eyepiece I was in awe. The views with this telescope are amazing! And you can’t beat the price!

A sneaky application from Amazon 17 May 2011

Frankly, I got this because of the mount. I found out that the mount had a standard vixon style dovetail. I bought a 1/4 20 Vixon adapter plate from another source that would allow my Personal Solar Telescope or my 80 mm short tube scope to be used on the mount. It works beautifully. There are several reviews that talk about cheap construction on the mount but I found none of that so I suspect an agenda on their part. Celestron apparently will try to market a $200 version of the mount but I got the same thing for under $170 and a 60 mm telescope was "thrown in". It is everything I had hoped for and shipping was free! PS, I had to put a rubber tape in the controller bracket to keep it from sliding down the tripod leg. :-)

My Family LOVES this Telescope! I Highly Recommend it! 8 May 2013

My wife and I decided to surprise our two kids (12 & 9 years old) with this telescope right before we left for our camping trip. Many of our other friends recommended the Celstron brand to us as they are also avid campers and spend many nights under the stars.

When we opened the box, the clear instructions made for a very easy set up and within 15 minutes we were all set to use it. We are pretty familiar with telescopes having used some other brands in the past, but none of them matched up to the ease of use and clarity of the instructions as this one. In no time, both kids were taking control of the hand control unit and searching for their favorite stars. The power of the unit is unbelievable, and the light weight but strong tripod made it very easy to maneuver. It doesn't matter if you are a first timer or a season pro, this telescope was perfect for everyone in our group.

We are VERY happy with this telescope and it was at a great price. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great telescope!
